The Official FloGrappling Male Gi Rankings

Rankings Guidelines

These are the guidelines we follow when creating these rankings. We are sharing these to better help fans and athletes understand the process by which we arrive at our list.

-We rank based off of all gi matches, regardless of ruleset. No matches in any other styles (no-gi, judo, combat jiu-jitsu, etc) will be considered. Results from any organization (IBJJF, AJP, ADXC, etc.) can be considered.

-Recent results are more heavily weighted than past results, with wins and losses older than 3 years being only lightly considered as a possible tie breaker. These rankings aim to reflect the top grapplers right now.

-Quality of competition and wins matters more than quantity. Long win streaks or a series of open tournament golds don’t impact a ranking if an athlete isn’t taking on a high level of competition.

-If a grappler doesn’t compete for 1 year (365 days), they will be removed from the rankings entirely. If an athlete announces their retirement, they will be removed after six months from their last match. After they make their return to competition, they will be reconsidered for ranking. Athletes can still be docked in their ranking for a lack of activity even if they are still technically eligible for the rankings.

-The quality of the event matters towards the quality of the win, meaning the bigger the competition the more impactful we view the result. For example, if two grapplers split matches but one wins at the Worlds, that win matters more than a win at a lower level tournament.

-Low level competition (for example, 1-star IBJJF events) will not be considered for rankings purposes - outside of counting towards your level of activity. We will rank anything in AJP above the national level. We will not rank any masters/executives matches. These are professional rankings that aim to reflect professional events.

-A head to head win does not guarantee that one grappler will automatically be ranked over another, if the losing grappler still has the superior overall resume. It will still greatly affect both grappler’s positions.

-Any belt level is eligible to be ranked, but for colored belts to be ranked it will require a remarkable level of competitive success.

-Because testing is uneven across different events, these rankings are not considering any potential doping violation results. If an athlete is stripped of their medal, we still consider the results on the mat during the event.
