ADCC is where we saw the heel hook really evolve into the dominant submission hold we see today and where leg locking truly became an art. Now, every competitor needs to have serious skill in recognizing and defending leg locks or they risk losing (and potentially losing very quickly).

One of the most interesting parts of grappling is seeing how it continues to evolve, even in small positions. Professional athletes and coaches are constantly looking for new and novel ways to initiate or counter existing techniques or strategies, and the moves trickle outward through jiu-jitsu from there. For a good recent example, we can look at the leg lock position that Nicky Ryan used recently at WNO 23 - and how Deandre Corbe answered that position with a counter at WNO 24 against a B-Team athlete.

The ADCC West Coast Trials saw many shocking submissions but the newly christened “Cisneros stretch” was maybe the most spectacular.

Jon “Thor” Blank attacked [person: Vagner Rocha] with a barrage of leg lock attempts at Who’s Number One: Duarte vs Vieira. For the most part, Rocha kept out of danger through the 15-minute match.
