After 13-Year Career, Andre Galvao Announces Retirement From Competition
May 31, 2018
One of the all-time greatest competitors in jiu-jitsu, Andre Galvao has decided to start a new chapter in his life.
The five-time ADCC champion and six-time IBJJF World champion, who co-founder the powerhouse team Atos, announced his retirement exclusively to FloGrappling.
"I think this chapter of my life is over. It's sad, but happy at the same time. Sad because I will need to stop doing what I love most," said Galvao.
"I have nothing to prove to anyone anymore. It's hard for an athlete to announce he needs to stop, you're done, it's over. I have ideas that I planned for my future, there's a lot of things going on at this time in my career."
Galvao– who is still committed to his 2019 ADCC superfight against Felipe Pena, but will not compete in any other events– will now focus entirely on his role as a mentor and coach for his Atos representatives.
"I want to make sure they [his team] are not only champions on the mat but that they can overcome challenges and become a better person, living their dream just liked I lived my dream."
A full documentary chronicling Galvao's experiences in Abu Dhabi will be released at a later date.
