Live Updates & Results | 2021 IBJJF Worlds Day 2

Day one of the IBJJF World Championships was filled with the action, submissions and incredible stories expected of an event of this caliber. Day two is sure to deliver as well, as the male purple and brown belts will take their place on the mats in search of the most coveted title in jiu-jitsu. With hundreds of competitors in search of just a few medals, we're guaranteed  thrilling action throughout the day.

Follow the action all day right here, as we'll be providing updates throughout the day so you don't have to miss the best action.

The team race is also heating up, and with some of the most competitive divisions coming up today, we may see a few teams set themselves ahead of the pack. Here is how the team race currently stands:

ADULT MALE

Alliance - 39 points

Unity - 15 points

Cens Academy -10 points

Gracie Barra - 10 points

ADULT FEMALE

Dream Art - 30 points

CheckMat - 29 points

GF Team - 23 points

Zenith BJJ - Las Vegas - 18 points

Unity Jiu-jitsu - 15 points


1:30 p.m. ET

Ismael Santos is the first brown belt featherweight to make it into the quarterfinals. His first opponent no-showed, and he scored an ankle lock victory in his second match.

ELijaj Pizzaro of Roberto Traven is the first brown belt middleweight into the quarterfinals. He's the no.8 seed in the division.

It's too early to call the shake out in the purple belt lightweight division, which is running simultaneously.

2:30 p.m. ET

The brown belt middleweight semis are set. Elijah Youngblood Pizarro will face Matheus Rodriguez on one side, and Vinicius Canto will face Luiz Athayde on the other. Pizarro has hit multiple submission on the day, including one against the no.1 seed Carlos Neto.

7 p.m. ET

AOJ's Matheus Rodriguez won the middleweight division at brown belt, and earned his black belt on his way off the podium.

Matheus Araujo won the brown belt roosterweight division, and Sebastian Serpa won light featherweight. Serpa was promoted to black belt on the podium.

Eduardo Roque won the featherweight division at brown belt, a category below the one he's used to competing at. He won No-Gi Worlds earlier this year at lightweight.

In the sepctacle of the day, Kade Ruotolo submitted Tye Ruotolo in the brown belt lightweight final. The Ruotolos hit several submissions throughout the day.

Jansen Gomes completed his strong 2021 season with a gold medal performance at medium heavyweight. He received his black belt from his on the podium, with the approval of coach Leo Vieira.

Pedro Monteiro looked unstoppable today, and defeated Elder Cruz in the heavyweight final, scoring a go-ahead two point sweep in the final ten seconds.

Mason Fowler won three matches for super heavyweight gold, and snatched a triangle in the final. He'll enter the open weight class later today.

Guilherme Bacha and Paulo Lanzelotti closed out the brown belt ultra heavyweight division, adding 12 points to Checkmat's solid team points haul on the day.

Up to now, the purple belt champions include:

  • Franco Dias of Unity | Middleweight
  • Junior Fernandes of Chckmat | Lightweight

Fernandes had six matches to gold, and caught three submissions.

10 p.m. ET

Pedro Monteiro needed just 21 seconds to defeat Mason Fowler in the brown belt absolute division, scoring an armbar over the superheavyweight champion. Fowler was promoted to black belt after winning gold and silver on the day.

Rayron Gracie earned gold in the purple belt absolute division, after closing out the ultra heavyweight class with Francisco Papasideiro.

Checkmat began the day outside the top five, and has now surpassed Alliance. The black belts begin tomorrow, and Alliance will test Checkmat's lead there, while other teams will also try to claw their way to the top. Unity has several black belts registered, and could also find their way on the podium on Sunday.
