Let’s clear something up right from the jump: the ankle lock is one of the most underrated submissions in modern jiu-jitsu.
Many competitors have developed such dexterity and flexibility in their ankles that the straight footlock isn’t enough to make the tap, and many would rather incur several pops or even a full break than surrender to the submission.
But more than a few specialists have emerged in the modern era of jiu-jitsu that wild the ‘botinha’ (little boot in Portuguese) with devastating efficiency: Mikey Musumeci, Fellipe Andrew, Bianca Basilio, Caio Terra, and Luiz Panza (featured image) all come to mind, and we've selected a few of our favorite matches to illustrate just how dangerous the straight ankle lock can be.
