Triumph and Tears Define Male Purple Belt Action On Day 2 Of IBJJF Worlds
Day two of the 2017 IBJJF World Championships delivered plenty of explosive action in the men's purple belt divisions.
Day two of the 2017 IBJJF World Championships delivered plenty of explosive action in the men's purple belt divisions.
There were a number of standout athletes among the various weight categories, with champions being crowned via dynamic submissions and dramatic decisions in closely-contested matches.
GF Team middleweight Mauricio Oliveira, who won blue belt gold here one year ago, returned to repeat the feat at purple. He submitted the very tough Alex Munis of Nova Uniao in the final via a choke from the back.
Atos talent Kaynan Duarte, who won double gold at Pans, won the medium heavyweight division with a tough 2-0 win over Andrew Wiltse in the final.
Another Atos rep who impressed was Jonnatas Gracie, who fought seven times in a stacked lightweight division to become champion. He beat Lucas Gomes of Alliance to become champ.
The loudest final of the day was definitely when Devhonte Johnson of Unity Jiu-Jitsu met Fabio Alano of Alliance. The American edged out the win via decision in a match that had big contingents from both teams passionately supporting their chosen competitors.
A special mention must go to Victor Hugo Costa Marques of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu for his savage submission in the ultra heavyweight weight final, when he choked Pedro Alex dos Santos Pimenta of GF Team.
The Cicero Costha team took the most purple belt golds with three: Thalison Soares won rooster, Diego Batista claimed light feather and Wilson Moreira Costa Junior won heavyweight.
