10 Top Purple Belts To Watch At 2025 Pans

The IBJJF Pans kick off tomorrow and there's tons of action for fans to enjoy all week, including some very deep colored belt brackets. Matches will be streaming exclusively on FloGrappling, with everything running through this weekend when black belts hit the mats.

While most eyes will be on the black belts to see who emerges as best of the best, there are many great purple belt brackets and athletes for fans to enjoy in the lead up. We picked out ten stellar prospects that you should keep an eye out for in Florida.

Vitor Crizel

I think the rooster class at adult male purple is really strong and Vitor Crizel of Alliance has risen to the top of that class so far. He won a tough Euros bracket, beating Alex Osorio and Bernardo Rosalba, and those will be his main opponents in this bracket again. He's got a very patient game that relies on his guard and if he's able to win gold again here then it's back to the drawing board for the rest of the field heading into Worlds. His first fight will be Friday at 11am.

Bernardo Gatti

Bernardo won one of the deepest brackets in Lisbon and now he enters Pans trying to repeat the performance (because this bracket is still very deep). First fight Friday at 10:06am, he will have five fights for gold. He's been successful as a colored belt already, including a blue belt world title last year, and uses the armbar as his most consistent finish (that I have seen). A possible Euro finals rematch with AOJ's Dominic Manno looms.

Caio Carreira

Caio was something of a surprise winner in Euros but now the underdog is on top after a run through a really deep bracket there. Things won't get any easier at Pans though, as his bracket is full up of talented guys like Davis Asare, Jacob Bornemann, Mateus Alexandrino, Jared Wade, and Caleb Eli Nascimento. Honestly this is the deepest purple belt bracket at the tournament, at least in terms of number of guys who can contend for gold. If Caio can repeat with gold here, that's a statement and proof that actually there may only be one true contender, despite the depth of talent. Still, he had some very tight matches at Euros that could have gone either way if one exchange changed. Things kick off for the GFT grappler on Friday at 10:51am.

Davis Asare

New Wave's Davis Asare is in for Pans after medaling at Euros in the same division. His run there ended in the semifinals against Carreira - and they will face off again in the semifinal. Even though Davis is a no-gi specialist now he still has a lot of skill in the gi and is definitely a fun watch, with his varied submission offense.

Jacob "Little Jacob" Bornemann

Little Jacob may not win this bracket but he's always a wild man out there so I would definitely make sure to tune in when he's up, Friday at 11:54am. He's been coming up through the ranks at Pedigo Submission Fighting and has always had the grit and mindset to compete with the best guys - now his technique and strategy are catching up too. He won No-Gi Pans last year and now is in the gi which is a surprise; I've only ever seen him in no-gi competition. He's a big X-factor with his physical power and aggression but it's definitely a question mark how he can deal with some of the nuances of gi-specific problems (for example, double sleeve guard, 50/50 in the gi, berimbolos). If he has answers for those questions, then he very well may just storm his way to first place.

Jefferson Santos

This heavyweight bracket is really interesting and there's two guys that really rise above the rest - Jefferson Santos and Rogério Leite. At Euros, Jefferson won the purple belt men's absolute so he has to be one of the most anticipated prospects at Pans, but he did lose in his weight class finals to Leite. Now they are both entered at Pans and this rubber match will be key in determining who carries the momentum into the Pyramid. Santos is a very athletic purple belt with good takedown skills and an intensity that is tough to match. Watch for him to try to be the bully when he kicks off his campaign on Friday at 11:54am.

Emily Leyva

It's always a good time watching Emily Leyva compete and she will be up at Pans at 1:42pm on Wednesday. The Atos light-feather has a very submission-oriented style and a knack for dramatic finishes (like her triangle armbar in the Euro semifinals). She is a really intense competitor who has had a lot of success already - but still is seeking her first colored belt World title. If she can repeat her performance from Pans she will be the clear favorite for when we get to Worlds.

Niolett Kis

Nikolett has really emerged over the last few years as one of the top colored belts to keep an eye on, which was unexpected for the young Hungarian purple belt. She won the open class at Euros, looking dominant after dropping a close decision in the finals of her weight class. She can wrestle well, she can play guard, and she has all those little tools that work together to win close matches. Her lightweight bracket is one of the toughest at the belt so it definitely won't be easy with grapplers like Eliza Nascimento, Maria Golden, and Julianna Wong in the mix.

Eliza Nascimento

Eliza is the Euros champion at this weight and belt, but is still the underdog coming in after being submitted by the two-seed Kis in the open later that same day. They are 1-1 on the year and will likely see each other again here and again at Worlds. To me, that puts a lot of pressure on this match to establish the lead in the series before you get to the Pyramid. Eliza has tons of experience despite her age and a great overall game, it's just a matter of execution against that elite level of her division.

Luandra Barbosa

Luandra is a really solid purple belt competitor who first popped up on my radar by winning the open class at blue belt Worlds a few years ago. Since then, she has kept up her winning ways as she develops her game. Now she enters Pans as the one seed, and someone who can do damage in both the weight class and absolute. In fact, she often will do better in the open after the weight class. She needs three wins for gold at medium-heavy, starting Wednesday at 2:07pm.
