Taking place every two years, the ADCC World Championships have long been dominated by Brazilians and Americans in terms of participants by country. This year, Canada checks in behind Brazil, USA, and Australia as the fourth most represented country with six athletes qualifying to fight at the 2024 ADCC World Championships.

The number of Canadians competing at ADCC has increased each year since 2019 where only Dante Leon and Oliver Taza competed.

Ethan Crelinsten | 66kg

Returning for his 3rd ADCC World Championships, Crelinsten was upset in the East Coast Trials semi-finals this year, before bouncing back and securing a 5-0 win over fellow ADCC qualifier and veteran Keith Krikorian.

A two-time Trials champion, Crelinsten is one of the 66kg division’s more experienced competitors under the ADCC ruleset. Despite suffering a first-round loss in 2022, Crelinsten rebounded with a submission victory over Fabricio Andrey just a few months later and scored recent victories in 2024 over UFC fighter Jordan Leavit and ADCC qualifier Deandre Corbe.

Deandre Corbe | 66kg

Deandre Corbe has been on fire since 2022, competing avidly and finding great success along the way with several IBJJF No-Gi World and Pan Championships medals to show for it in addition to several impressive superfight and tournament wins. Blitzing through the 2024 West Coast Trials, Corbe defeated three ADCC veterans en route to gold, punching his ticket to the 2024 ADCC World Championships in style.

Max Hanson | 77kg

Making his ADCC debut, Max Hanson joins his teammate and coach at Adama Jiu-Jitsu Dante Leon in the -77kg division at the ADCC World Championships. Since receiving his black belt in 2023, Hanson has continued to progress through the competitive grappling circuit with impressive victories over ADCC qualifiers Oliver Taza and Jeremy Skinner at the Enigma Invitational before a fourth place finish at the 2024 West Coast Trials. In his biggest opportunity to date, Hanson must find a way to navigate through a bracket full of ADCC veterans.

Oliver Taza | 77kg

A veteran of three previous ADCC World Championships, Oliver Taza first made it to the big stage in 2017 after winning the European Trials and finishing as runner up at the US trials. Repeating as European Trials Champion in 2022, Taza again fell in the first round at ADCC Worlds. During the campaign to qualify for ADCC 2024, Taza finished as runner-up at the West Coast Trials & first European Trials and took third place at East Coast Trials and the second European Trials. Recently, Taza finished as runner-up at the Enigma Invitational and submitted his way through Submission Hunter Pro 90.

Dante Leon | 77kg

One of the most accomplished grapplers of his generation, Leon has proven himself a force to be reckoned with at any weight class he competes at, whether 70kg or 97kg. A multiple time IBJJF No-Gi World and No-Gi Pan Champion, Leon won a bronze medal at the 2022 ADCC World Championships after finishing fourth in 2019. Never shying away from elite competition, Leon went undefeated with all submissions during the AIGA team competition in 2023 which included victories over Kenta Iwamoto and Johnatha Alves.

Brianna Ste-Marie | -65kg

Earning a silver medal in her ADCC debut at the 2022 World Championships, Brianna Ste-Marie was one of the breakout performers of the tournament and has continued to impress to date. Following up her ADCC performance with an IBJJF No-Gi World Championships gold medal and back-to-back IBJJF World Championships podium finishes in the gi. Ste-Marie likely enters the division as a high seed and strong contender for gold.
