A quick explainer on how the individual and team vs team matches of QUINTET work
This Sunday, September 10th, QUINTET Grappling relaunches with an event streaming live on FloGrappling from Yokohama, Japan. The QUINTET 4 event is an intended reboot after a hiatus without events and will feature QUINTET's signature team-based submission only action, with stars like Craig Jones, Nick Rodriguez, Kazushi Sakuraba, and more expected to compete.
All QUINTET action will stream live on FloGrappling everywhere except Japan. For new fans of QUINTET, here is a simplified explainer of what to expect when you tune in on the 10th;
Who Will Be There?
Four teams will compete in a bracket, meaning there will be one eventual team champion of the event. Each team has five grapplers, and they all must weigh in under a combined limit - meaning you can have a unique mix of big or small athletes on your squad.
- B-Team - Craig Jones, Nick Rodriguez, Nicky Ryan, Jacob Rodriguez, Jozef Chen
- Team Polaris - Owen Livesey, Mateusz Szczeciński, Santeri Lilius, Gregor Gracie, Jed Hue
- Team 10th Planet - PJ Barch, Richie Martinez, Geo Martinez, Kyle Boehm, Amir Allam
- Team Sakuraba - Kazushi Sakuraba, Haisam Rida, Tomoshige Sera, Daisuke Nakamura, Harry Grech
How The Team Matches Work
Quintet is about survival and submission, until only one team is left. One athlete from each team starts, no matter their size. Whoever wins by submission stays on the mat, meaning one grappler could take out an entire team by themselves if they are able to tap them all in a row. However, if you hit the time limit and no one has tapped out, then both grapplers are eliminated.
This keeps going until only one team is left. That team will advance in the bracket. There are no points and no decisions, it is submit or survive anytime you are on the mat.
When Is The Event
QUINTET 4 ReBOOT will take place at 6pm JST in Yokohama, Japan. With time differences, that will be 5am EST/4am CST. Tickets are still available here.
The first round matchups will be
- Team Sakuraba vs Team 10th Planet
- Team Polaris vs The B-Team Bulls
and the two winners will then face off to determine the champion team. There will be no consolation match for third place.
