Takeshiro Tanino, Atos' teenager called 'Samurai' won the purple belt open class at the 2023 IBJJF Europeans today, showing off his tremendous takedowns, passing, and wrestle up sweeps.Tanino had taken third in the medium heavyweight division, falling to Alliance Danylo Wruck, but came back in the absolute, outscoring affiliate teammate Natã Tenca of Almeida BJJ.

Tenca had earlier won the heavyweight division with three submissions in four matches, and continued to the open class where he secured two more submissions in four matches.

In the women's divisions, Marina Carraro seecured double gold, claiming the super heavyweight and absolute titles with 4 submissions in 6 matches.

The women's purple belt divisions were spread across nationalities, demonstrating the growth of jiu-jitsu, particularly in Europe. Five of the eight female champions were born in Europe, including middleweight champion Selma Vik of Norway, who submitted each of her division opponents before a short-lived openweight run.

Cole Abate had the most impressive performance of any athlete today. The lightweight submitted four opponents on his way to the final, where he defeated the red hot Romulo Rocha. Abate earned his brown belt on the podium from Gui Mendes.

One of the most interesting storylines of the day was the medium heayweight final, which once again pitted Alliance Sao Paulo against Alliacne Porto Alegre.

Leo Ferreira submitted Danylo Wruck with a footlock inside of 60 seconds to claim the gold. Later in the day, Ferreira incurred a disciplinary penalty in the absolute. By rule, he forfeited his medium heavyweight gold to Wruck.
