Nicholas Meregali: Exclusive Interview before 2018 IBJJF Worlds
We sat down for an in-depth discussion with the elusive and enigmatic Nicholas Meregali, who practically vanished after winning gold at the 2017 IBJJF World Championship after beating Leandro Lo.

One year later, we wanted to know where he had been, how he was preparing for the 2018 Worlds and what he thinks he needs to do to become champion once again.
Did you decide in which category you’ll compete?
"Super-heavyweight. It’s difficult for me to gain weight as I don’t use any anabolics– illicit substances, which are normal in the sport. For me one or two kilos makes a lot of difference. It’s not easy to put on one or two kilos. Since last year I’ve been trying to go up. I’ve gained maybe four kg since last year in total.
"So it’s a small difference, but for me it’s a big difference. When it comes time to compete it’ll... No, for sure it will have a great impact. I should be about 96 or 97kg in the gi. But I prefer not to cut weight so I’m stronger for the absolute."
