Caio Terra's Advice: 'Forget The Competition; Remember Why You Really Started Jiu-Jitsu'
Just after the 2016 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships I caught up with 10x World Champion Caio Terra of team 'Brasa CTA' to reflect on the tournament, his student Yuri Simoes and the competition philosophy he teaches his students.
“I always tell my students, the tournaments are not the most important. They might be your personal goal but you just can’t focus on it too much. Because there are so many people trying and a lot of people will be heartbroken. Although I will be there for them winning or losing, but if they make that their main goal in life they might get heartbroken. And in the end they will figure out what we all figure out. All the medals mean nothing. None of us started jiu-jitsu because we wanted to be a champion, we started because we liked it, loved it. When you forget about the competition and remember why you really started jiu-jitsu, I think a lot of people would have done it different. That’s what I try to pass to my students, if they want to keep competing that OK. But I think sharing jiu-jitsu, sharing the love that you have to others. That conquers a lot more than just a medal that will eventually will be completely forgotten.”
