Kaynan Duarte looks back on his incredible path to victory at the 2019 ADCC World Championships.
Dec 3, 2020
The Trials in Brazil are less than a month out, and historically have produced some of the strongest competitors in ADCC history. As we described in our article, "7 Stories You Need To Follow Ahead Of ADCC 2022": Statistically, the athletes who win the South American trials could be considered the favorites among the ADCC newcomers. Just 37 athletes who have earned their spot at ADCC via the trials went on to hit the podium in the same ADCC Worlds they qualified for. 24 of them won the South American trials. A handful of ADCC Trials winners would achieve their dream of going on to win gold at the World Championships in the same year, a feat performed by only seven people in history (Mario Sperry, Dean Lister, Roger Gracie, Rafael Mendes, Michelle Nicolini, Davi Ramos and Claudio Calasans). Notice how six of those seven champions are all Brazilian. That's why paying close attention to who emerges the winner in the ADCC South American Trials is essential for any ADCC fan. We may witness a legacy being born, or stars emerge. Don't forget that as recently as 2017, Kaynan Duarte exploded onto the scene after winning Trials as a teenaged purple belt competitor. He tapped out an ADCC champ in his opening match before being knocked out of the Worlds that year, but two years later he became a champion.

There are a number of leading candidates. Kaynan, Cyborg, Victor Hugo, maybe even Craig Jones. All of these men have the ability to dominate in Gordon‘s absence but suddenly everything looks a lot more competitive, and there will be a brief and furious race as competitors vie for the top spot in the ranking. Kaynan is probably the safest bet to rise to the top, although he’s stumbled at times and has suffered notable losses (consider the times he tapped out to Cyborg or Lachlan Giles’ leg locks). If Kaynan does emerge as the number one he won’t suffer the same problem Gordon did. Whereas there were few challengers willing to face Gordon, there is less danger to one’s health or reputation in taking a match against Kaynan. Victor Hugo is among the front of the pack when it comes to claiming the number one spot although Kaynan holds a recent win over him. Hugo has the size and skills to beat any heavyweight in the world, but he has less experience no-gi than ADCC champ Duarte. Cyborg’s grappling career enjoyed a resurgence in 2020 but his attention may have shifted to his many business ventures. He had signed to face Gordon in July on our Road to ADCC event, but at this point few matches hold interest for the veteran grappler who has held nearly every major title that exists in the sport. Craig Jones’ deadly submission skills could see him take Gordon’s spot as the Danaher Death Squad’s premier heavyweight submission artist, but he needs to get through Luiz Panza first. Jones has always been more human than Gordon, and his losses to Matheus Diniz, Mason Fowler and Kaynan Duarte place him lower down the ladder on the P4P list.

Kaynan Duarte is one of the new wave of black belts, and he has always done no-gi. He's not just an IBJJF guy, he won ADCC Trials in 2017 (where he beat Patrick Gaudio in the final) and tapped Pablo Popovitch in the opening round of Worlds later that year. He had a close match with Gordon Ryan in the absolute final at the 2018 IBJJF Pan No-Gi and was winning on points until he got submitted. Had he fought more tactically he could have pulled off a points victory. Back in the day Kaynan didn't have a leglock game– his former teammate Keenan Cornelius used a heel hook to submit him in 2017, but since then Duarte's leglcok game has gotten very good. We even saw him use the heel hook defense / back-take against both Gordon Ryan and Craig Jones, so it goes to show you're not going to leglock him easily. Kaynan has the ability to win any division he enters– but is he capable of winning +99kg gold at ADCC?
