Big Dan Earns $5k Prize With 2 Submissions At Emerald City Invitational 5
Manasoiu, the well known leg locker, showed off his top game in the 8-man open weight bracket. Estevan Martinez caught a RNC in the main event superfight.
Dan Manasoiu won the open weight Emerald City Invitational tournament on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Atlantic City, NJ, collecting the $5,000 prize with two submissions in regulation and one in overtime.
Manasoiu, who has spent most of his young career working from his guard and attacking leg locks, demonstrated his skill in the top game at ECI 5 in the eight-man absolute tournament, spamming pressure half guard passes and leaning on his opponents in mount, reminiscent of New Wave Jiu-Jitsu teammate Gordon Ryan.
After defeating Kyle Myers via submission in overtime, Manasoiu earned a rear naked choke victory over Maxim Cote in regulation, and fell back to his comfort zone in the final, catching a heel hook on Austin Baker in just 42-seconds.
Baker submitted each of his two opponents to make it to the final against Manasoiu. He earned an armbar victory over Steve Joachim and a katagatame submission against Franco Pana.
In the main event superfight, Emerald City regular Estevan Martinez defeated 2022 brown belt No-Gi Pan champion Valor Boyer via rear naked choke with 90-seconds remaining in regulation.
In an earlier ranked superfight, Bryce Layme of Animals Jiu-Jitsu defeated Eric Naples via rear naked choke in overtime.
