Matheus Gabriel secured the $19,000 prize in the Lightweight Grand Prix. Ana Rodrigues earned the submission of the night bonus with an armbar victory.
Matheus Gabriel defeated Meyram Maquine in the BJJ Stars 9 Lightweight GP final, capturing the $19,000 grand prize in an event honoring the memory of Leandro Lo.
Gabriel defeated Maquine on sweep points, winning 2-0 in the final. Earlier in the night, he submitted Wallison Oliveira and outscored Israel Almeida.
Maquine won on score in each of his matches en route to the final. Despite being the smallest man in the tournament, Maquine showed off his takedown abilities and relied on his high pace to score. He won his first match 7-0 over Pedro Maia before winning a wrestling shootout against Luiz Paulo in the semifinal via advantage.
Maquine and Gabriel, both IBJJF World Champions, were the division favorites. Following the hand raise, both men celebrated the memory of Leandro Lo, dancing in a style reminiscent of the killed grappling icon.
Throughout each of the matches, Gabriel wore a gi with an airbrushed image of Leandro on his back.
Anna Rodrigues earned a submission of the night bonus for her armbar finish over rookie black belt Maria Claudia.
Paulo Miyao also earned a submission victory, a heel hook over Alexandre Vieira in a no-gi match.
Samuel Nagai made his no-gi debut in an ADCC rules match against ADCC veteran Fabricio Andrey. Nagai earned a decision victory in a match that did not allow overtime, pulling guard early and nearly sweeping Andrey in a late wrestle-up attempt.
Isaque Bahiense scored a victory via penalty over Mica Galvao in an ADCC rules match. Galvao was penalized for pulling guard while in turtle position. That call has been criticized by ADCC head organizer Mo Jassim.
Jansen Gomes had one of the most impressive performances of the night, out wrestling Marcos Petcho.
