When Jonnatas first looked at the purple belt absolute bracket at the 2017 IBJJF World Championships, he didn't feel too great about his path to victory. After all, he was a lightweight with three ultra-heavyweight medalists standing in his way.
As he readied himself to tackle maybe the toughest bracket he'd ever competed in, three words kept echoing in his head: "nothing is impossible"
Jonnatas surprised even himself that day when he took to the mats to prove today was his day and he was the best purple belt in the world, no matter the weight class. He proceeded to take out the gold, silver and bronze medalists from the ultra-heavyweight division as well as medium heavyweight silver medalist Andre Wiltse.
