Welcome, grappling friends. Today's Grappling Bulletin is a short one, but full of the info you need as a fan of all things jiu-jitsu. In today's news:
Gordon Ryan racks up 78 points and five submissions in five matches, just to show he can.
Lucas "Hulk" Barbosa puts the brakes on the Roberto Jimenez hype train but not before they deliver a Match of the Year contender.
Roberto Jimenez wastes no time in getting back on the horse but hits another bump, this time in Houston.
AJP Tour rolls into London, but coronavirus fears see the event happen without spectators. A sign of things to come?
Gordon Ryan is basically just selling DVDs at this point (and can you blame him?)
We all know Gordon Ryan is good. I mean really good. Like P4P #1 in the world good.
But since ADCC we don't really get to see HOW good he is as the level of competition is... lacking. There are few grapplers in the world who can hang with Gordon even on a bad day, and the opponents he's faced lately (Aaron "Tex" Johnson, Gabriel Gonzaga, Rousimar Palhares and the wrestlers Pat Downey and Bo Nickal) didn't come close to testing him.
We all know Gordon wants matches with Felipe Pena and Andre Galvao, but neither of those is likely to happen any time soon. Galvao has turned down massive sums of money to do it, and it's uncertain he'll even return in 2021 to defend his ADCC superfight title against 2019 absolute winner Gordon. Felipe Pena seems to enjoy frustrating Gordon by dodging a third match, lording his two previous wins over the American.
Gordon has to stay busy, and so his preferred pastime of late seems to be taking matches and using them as marketing opportunities for his DVDs, treating them as live-action demos of his instructionals.
Case in point: Gordon competed over the weekend at a low-level no-gi event as part of the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. He entered the no-gi expert absolute division and had five matches. He even brought a film crew along so he can later release a voice-over where he will narrate his matches and explain the technical concepts at work.
A few observations. First off, nobody is going to complain about having Gordon break down the minutiae of his game. Quite the opposite — having him go into detail about how he puts his techniques to work sounds pretty, pretty, pretty cool.
From the opponents' perspectives, it must be both exhilarating and terrifying to see that the one and only Gordon Ryan has signed up for your division. It's not every day a three-time ADCC gold medalist enters a local tournament, after all. I suspect most people would welcome the opportunity to roll with Gordon, although how many weekend warriors want to get trashed on video and then used as the subject of a masterclass in world-class techniques?
As for the matches, Gordon was pretty nice to his opponents, opting to rack up the points but making sure to finish every match. In five matches, he scored a total of 78 points (19-0, 19-0, 13-0, 10-0 and 17-0).

Lucas Hulk Barbosa hands Jimenez first submission loss
Fight to Win had an early contender for Match of the Year with their main event at F2W 137 in Denver, CO. Lucas Barbosa took on the upstart Roberto Jimenez and handed him his first submission loss, winning via armbar after a terrific scrap. Watch it here.
Improving his record to 6-0 Michael Liera Jr. (Atos / Logos Jiu Jitsu) became the Fight 2 Win welterweight champion, in a co-main event against No. 4-ranked featherweight, Marcio Andre. Watch the match and see.
No. 7 medium-heavy weight Jake Watson (Maracaba BJJ) defeated No. 4-ranked Rudson Matheus (CTA) in a strategic battle. This is a huge win for the rookie black belt entering the 2020 competitive season.
The event was notable for another reason – 76.2 percent of matches end in submission, the highest in F2W history!

Roberto jumps right back on the horse – but it bucks
He already earned enough points for Pans at the Kansas City Open a week ago, but Roberto was signed up to compete in the IBJJF Houston Winter Open two days after his match with Hulk, and it proved a golden opportunity to get more experience at black belt before Pans come around.
Jimenez took gold in the heavyweight division with two wins, then entered the open weight. His first match was a win over the lightweight Ross Keeping; then he ran into the GF Team ultra-heavyweight Ricardo Evangelista. A two-time black belt silver medalist at Worlds, most recently in 2019, and an Abu Dhabi World Pro champion, Evangelista is one of the most noted big men of the modern era and his physicality proved too much for Jimenez.
The rookie came close to passing and getting mount but the big man shucked him off with ease. Evangelista sucked Jimenez into his game and scored a verbal submission via toehold.

AJP Tour Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London
No spectators were allowed into the arena for the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London due to fear of coronavirus transmission. Only staff and competitors (who were all allowed a "plus one") attended. Is this a sign of things to come in Europe? Italy has already canceled events, and the 2020 Abu Dhabi World Pro has been postponed until later this year.
