The IBJJF European Championships is one of the most diverse and well-represented tournaments of the year.
There is a traditional Brazilian dominance that exists so clearly in most other major events. That's been less and less the case at Euros in recent years, with a number of international champions crowned and even more non-Brazilians making it to the podium.
Due to a number of factors, fewer of the big Brazilian names tend to sign up for Euros. One of the reasons is the proximity of the competition to the end-of-year holiday period, a traditional time where many Brazilians will return to their home country for an extended vacation of up to a month in duration.
This isn't to try and say that the tournament is any less competitive – there are always plenty of tough athletes in the divisions who are ready to disrupt the status quo – but Euros has historically allowed non-Brazilian athletes a chance to shine.
At the 2020 Euros, non-Brazilian athletes were able to claim nine of 19 possible black belt gold medal (male and female combined). This was a huge improvement compared to 2019, when Brazilians took 15 of the 19 golds.
Compare that to 2019 Pans and Worlds, where non-Brazilians were nearly shut out; they claimed only two of the available 19 golds at each tournament.
With a vastly different roster of athletes and a truly international flavor, Euros offers something different. What it lacks in depth of talent it makes up for in diversity and the ability to showcase emerging talents.
2020 Euros gave a look at a wide array of international athletes who went on to win gold. Here is a breakdown of the gold and silver medals by country at the 2020 European Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship.
