Demian Maia Submits Ben Askren At UFC Singapore
Demian Maia proved once again that the mata leão is the king of the jungle in mixed martial arts.
Demian Maia proved once again that the "mata leão" is the king of the jungle in mixed martial arts with a third-round submission over wrestling super-star Ben Askren at UFC Singapore.
The first round out of a potential five was primarily a feeling out process; Demian got the better of the striking scenarios, but there were no real exchanges of consequence to be seen.
Things got interesting in round two where Maia's jiu-jitsu was on full display; after getting taken down by Askren, the Brazilian locked up a triangle and transitioned to an omoplata attack, using it to sweep to mount and even jumping on the back, before eventually getting reversed by Askren at the end of the round.

Askren again tempted fate by taking Maia down in the third round.
Maia had a quick look at a heel hook before instead choosing to come up to top position. Clearly exhausted, Askren offered little defense in the way of a guard, and Maia moved right into the mount.
Askren then turtled, and that was all she wrote: Maia locked in the body triangle and sunk in the RNC choke to secure his 14th win by submission and improving his overall record to 28-9.
