The super pink eye was no exaggeration. Keenan is out of ADCC.
'Super' pink eye was no exaggeration. Keenan is out of ADCC.
As we reported earlier this week, renowned lapel trickster Keenan Cornelius is suffering from a serious case of tropical eye rot, an affliction which has struck down a number of high-profile grapplers.
It's actually a form of viral conjunctivitis called epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, aka EKC), and he was far from the only person to catch it. There were outbreaks at Renzo's, Atos in San Diego and elsewhere.
It is a highly contagious infection and spread via physical contact, and Keenan came down with it just over one week out from ADCC 2019, where he was meant to compete in the -99kg division. A replacement has yet to be announced.
“This was a really unfortunate situation, I still had a great experience with the training camp while finding a renewed appreciation for no gi," said Keenan. "I will continue fighting it in the future. Until then I’ll focus on opening my gym this next month. I hope to see you all there after I’m fully recovered.”
The -99kg division still contains competitors such as Gordon Ryan, Dillon Danis, Lucas Hulk Barbosa, Jackson Sousa, Patrick Gaudio and more.
The condition is extremely painful and in severe cases can cause the eyes to swell shut and affect the eyesight, potentially long-term. As mentioned, it is highly contagious and people should not train if they present symptoms.
Update: Keenan is replaced by James Puopolo
