With a limit of two athletes of the same nationality per weight category, the rest must face off in a single-elimination bracket with the winners advancing through to the main bracket on April 25.
Here is a rundown of who advanced and how.
Kaynan Duarte had two matches, beating Renato Cardoso 2-0 and outpointing Jackson Sousa 6-0 to make it into the 94kg division.
Joao Gabriel Rocha won the 110kg qualifier after three matches. He submitted Mauricio Lima with an armbar and beat both Rodrigo Ribeiro and Matheus Felipe Xavier by points.
Joao and Paulo Miyao both had two matches to win the 62kg and 69kg divisions. Joao beat Danilo Barbosa (9-0) and Pablo Mantovani (4-2), while Paulo beat Murilo Amaral (2-0) and Hilton Silva (14-0).
Beatriz Mesquita scored two wins by submission in the 62kg qualifer, choking both Natalia Zumba and Deborah Santos from the back.
Also:
• Carlos Alberto "Bebeto" Oliviera qualified at 56kg after winning every match in a round-robin division that included Cleber Sousa Jose Lima.
• Guilherme Rocha won the 77kg division after four matches that included a win over Tiago Bravo in the final
• Matheus Romero unexpectedly emerged the winner in the 85kg qualifier. Both Gabriel Arges and Isaque Bahiense no-showed due to injury, but the division will contained Manuel Ribamar, Gabriel Almeida and Thiago Sa. Romero beat Sa in the final 2-2, 3-1 adv.
• Ana Rodrigues won two matches at 55kg to qualify
• Thamires Aquino returns and submitted two opponents to qualify at 49kg
• Nathiely de Jesus submitted both Ewelyn Arruda and Rafaela Bertolot with triangles to qualify at 90kg.
