Fight 2 Win 106 is back on March 30 with more absolutely brilliant submission-only match-ups, this time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 

The main event features heavyweight warriors Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu (Fight Sports) and Luiz Panza (Checkmat), and is complemented by female phenoms vying for the flyweight title in the co-main event between current F2W champion Ana Talita Alencar (Alliance) and IBJJF World champion Karen Antunes (Checkmat). 

Say the name “Cyborg” and you are certain to get nods of respect and excitement from everyone, regardless of their generation in jiu-jitsu. For this “renaissance man”, the division doesn’t matter: adult or masters, gi or no-gi– the rules don’t matter. Playing guard or passing it– the position doesn’t matter. 

Cyborg has faced the toughest old school competitors while they were in their prime and still mixes it up with the new school, recently contending against submission grappling star Gordon Ryan and losing only by DQ. In his hefty career he has claimed titles in almost every major tournament: ADCC absolute, IBJJF No Gi Worlds, IBJJF Pan Ams and IBJJF Europeans. Gracing elite black belt podiums for nearly a decade and a half, Cyborg shows no signs of slowing down. Such extensive competitive experiences leaves little to no room for opponents to surprise him on the mat. Both mental and physical endurance, as well as technical prowess, are demanded by anyone who hopes to successfully challenge this legend.

Speaking of well-rounded competitors, Luiz Panza is an IBJJF No-Gi World champion and IBJJF Pan American champion. The Checkmat black belt has an inventory of other accolades in both gi and no-gi. In fact, both athletes were so confident in their gi and no-gi skills that they let the fans vote in what format they would compete, which ultimately fated the pair to meet in the gi. 

Last year was a big year for Panza on and off the mats as he claimed the most prized title of “dad” with the birth of his first daughter in the spring of 2018. As such, he was not as active in the competitive arena appearing only in ACB and the IBJJF World Championships, and has yet to compete in 2019. Despite that Panza will come to the stage calloused with a rugged competitive history, including submission victories over Ricardo Evangelista and Fellipe Trovo, both regarded with high esteem in the competitive arena. 

With a submission victory rate of 75% and famed for his slick “botinha” (or straight anklelock) the 10-minute sub-only format is perfectly suited for Checkmat’s agile and aggressive submission hunter to make his return to competition. Fans can expect a calculated but fearless match between these two predators as they chase the submission.

The F2W 106 card also hosts some dynamite female match ups. The co-main event is a flyweight title match between two of the sport’s most exciting women to watch: Talita Alencar (Alliance) and Karen Antunes (Checkmat). Alencar currently holds the F2W Flyweight belt, but no one is more prepared to end her reign than indomitable IBJJF featherweight World champion, Karen Antunes. 

“Gentle” is not a word many would use to describe the martial art of either of these athletes, so sub-only and slams are sure to add a spark to an already explosive match up. Antunes is known for her aggressive passing, fast pace, and vicious submissions, as seen when she submitted Bianca Basilio with a vicious armbar in less than a minute at the 2018 Pans. Both took home silver medals at last week’s IBJJF Pan Ams and will be hungry for redemption this weekend. 

Florida transplant Luanna Alzuguir (Aziz Jiu Jitsu) and Catherine Perret (Checkmat) meet in what is sure to be a thrilling 145 lbs, black belt gi match. Alzuguir’s wife, Ana Carolina ‘Baby’ Vieira, will be appearing on F2W 107 card, so the power couple is looking to make a statement in back-to-back events.
