Russia Dominates Gi and No-Gi at 2018 UWW World Grappling Championship

Russia dominated the Men's Seniors gi and no-gi divisions at the United World Wrestling (UWW) World Grappling Championship winning six out of eight no-gi gold medal and five out of eight gi gold medals.

Ukraine came out on top of a close race with Russia in the women's no-gi divisions, with Poland narrowly beating Ukraine in the gi.

The Russian mens team followed up on their dominant performance Saturday in no-gi by doubling the score of the second place team in the gi, absolutely running away with the team trophy.

Overall the Russian men brought home five gold, one silver and one bronze in the gi tournament. In no-gi, Russian claimed six gold medals and one silver, with no result at 77kg due to not entering a competitor.

Bilarov sinks in the darce

The biggest name on the Russian team was Abdurahman Bilarov, an ADCC veteran and possibly Russia’s top pound-for-pound no-gi grappler. Bilarov submitted all three opponents: Kazhigali Tuleshev (KAZ), Andrii Haleta (UKR) and Kamil Umiski (POL) in the final with a darce choke, something of a speciality of his.

A mention for a standout performance must go to Russia’s Rimma Anufrieva, who took gold gi and no-gi at 71kg submitting every opponent she faced. Anufrieva ran through opponents from Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Italy using an array of joint attacks and chokes.

The Ukrainian no-gi women’s squad medaled at every weight (two silver, three bronze) to edge out Russia by a slim three points in the no-gi race, who claimed three gold and one silver.

In the gi, Poland came out on top after defeating no-gi champs Ukraine by four points. The Polish women had two golds and one silver while Ukraine claimed one gold and three bronze.

Miyao scores double gold for Brazil

The big story of the weekend besides the Russian domination would be the individual performance of Joao Miyao at 62kg. The lone Brazilian entered in the gi and no-gi divisions, only conceding points from pulling guard in his matches. Miyao won by triangle, putting Akhmed Iasaev of Russia to sleep in the no-gi final.

Team USA beset by injury

Team USA earned three medals and finished in fourth place as a team, one point behind making the podium. Kalin Goodsite went 3-1 on the day for a third place finish at 62 kg, meanwhile Travis Clark would go 2-1 and claim bronze at +100kg. Stephen Ramos looked dominant in winning three matches on his way to the finals, where he would go down in a controversial overtime loss to Dymytro Netchachev of Ukraine.

The USA mens team scrapped entrants into three gi weight divisions because of injuries suffered during Saturdays competition. The team would end up walking away with two silver medals, from Carlos Soto at 92kg and Vincent Mancuso at +100kg.
