UFC and ADCC veteran Vagner Rocha defeated Alex Marin in a combat jiu-jitsu match with an unusual and little-seen submission.
The main event of MMA promotion XFN 21, the match was held in a cage. Combat jiu-jitsu resembles a grappling match as neither combatant wears gloves or competes shirtless. Under combat jiu-jitsu rules, open hand slaps are permitted when the combatants were on the mat.
Rocha used a number of power doubles to put Marin on the canvas, and patiently settled into increasingly superior positions while selectively firing off power slaps to the head, body and thighs of Marin. At one point, Rocha pulled up Marin’s rash guard to expose the ribs before slapping the bare skin.
Passing to a three-quarter mount and then taking the back, Rocha secured a hand over the mouth of Marin to win via a smother choke in a little under four minutes of action.
The renowned black belt– who is an EBI Combat Jiu-Jitsu champion and finished second in the recent KASAI Pro 170lb tournament– used his post-fight interview to praise his opponent and thanked him for the match.
“Let’s give Alex a hand because nobody wanted to come in here and do this with me,” said Rocha.
Rocha was accompanied by mentor Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu and close friend and training partner Gilbert ‘Durinho’ Burns.
