Weekend Recap: Mackenzie Dern Opens Up On UFC Weight Issues

Mackenzie Dern, one of jiu-jitsu's brightest stars, had an up-and-down weekend. She won her UFC fight but missed weight badly. Here she explains all.

Dern submitted Amanda Cooper with a first-round rear-naked choke at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. She came in 7lb over the 115lb weight limit but the fight still went ahead.

In the post-event press conference, Dern was asked about why she failed to make weight for the fight. She was candid in her responses and held nothing back when discussing with reporters.

"Everybody's been asking me, "What happened with your weight?' I could give you 10,000 excuses, but I believe what happened with my weight was months ago, way back, back in my last fight," she said.

"I think it's my diet, right? The fact I was able to do it before meant I thought I knew what I was doing, a lot of things have happened. It's not an excuse, but I missed a flight, various things happened.

"Since I arrived the UFC were trying to help me, I said I would do it, I did it last time. 9 AM Friday came around, and nothing more would come off. I was in the sauna, I wasn't even sweating, I couldn't walk anymore, and the commission said I couldn't go on.

"I'm ashamed at that, I don't want that to happen again. It's a mistake. I'm going to Las Vegas to work with them to make sure it doesn't happen again."

She continued: "My manager said the UFC will want me to move up in weight. I believe they're wrong. They called me on Friday and said, 'We have an institute in Vegas; we want you to work with you here.' I already said OK. I can't miss this opportunity to get help from this organization that's so big. It's going to help me make weight. But they already told me even without a fight they're going to want me to make 52kg (115lb) and that's fine. It's what I need."

ADCC champ Davi Ramos scores solid submission, calls out Kabib

2015 -77kg ADCC champion Davi Ramos advanced to 8-2 on Saturday night, scoring a rear-naked choke (or face crank, if you will) against Nick Hein on UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro.

Ramos used his post-fight speech to call out lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

"I'm a jiu-jitsu guy, he's a wrestler," Ramos said. "I would enjoy if he took me down. I know he's very good; he's another level right now. I have a lot of things to do to improve, but I'm coming."
