Weekend Recap: Erberth Santos Bounces Back, TLI Rules Washington D.C.

It was another packed weekend in jiu-jitsu, with events in San Jose, Washington D.C., Poznan, and Rio de Janeiro... Here's your essential recap.

Erberth bounces back in Rio with double gold

We're quick to point out his missteps but we also want to highlight that Erberth Santos is—make no mistake—still a world-class black belt and one of the most dangerous grapplers in the world.

Following a shocking loss in Florianopolis at the end of March, Erberth is already back to his winning ways and took double gold at the 2018 IBJJF Rio Open. He closed out the ultra heavyweight with his friend Luan Carvalho, who—it must be noted—is a natural lightweight fighting up at the maximum category!

Watch our highlight of Erberth from last year's Rio Open and let's hope he finds his form again soon.

Notable results from around the world

There were IBJJF events in Poznan, Poland; Washington D.C.; and San Jose. Here's a quick rundown of the most notable results:

TLI rules Washington D.C.

The IBJJF Washington D.C. Open was dominated by one team, and that's Team Lloyd Irvin. TLI finished in first place in both gi and no-gi as a team, with over double the points of second place in both formats. Standout results from their squad included:

  • Nine purple belt gold medals (male and female), three brown belt gold medals (male and female), and four black belt gold medals (men's division).
  • In the gi, Shane Jamil Hill Taylor took featherweight gold (beating Isaac Doederlein), Tim Spriggs got super heavyweight, Mahamed Aly was ultra heavyweight champ, and then Spriggs and Aly closed out the open class. Taylor and Aly closed out the no-gi open class the following day, too.
  • Middleweights Angelo Claiborne and Matthew Fox closed out the brown belt absolute division.

Poland's #1

No surprise that Polish black belt Adam Wardzinski, possibly Europe's top black belt competitor, took double gold at the IBJJF Open in Poznan, Poland. He beat Jakub Mroczkowski in the heavyweight division final and Bradley Hill in the open class, both Gracie Barra athletes.

Grippo deals with adversity

Gianni Grippo got gold in the lightweight division at the IBJJF Washington D.C. Open but not before getting his guard passed by Johnny Tama. They are Alliance teammates but based on different coasts and so saw no issue in competing against each other in the final. Tama's guard passing is no joke—remember he passed Joao Miyao's guard last year?

Kennedy's roller-coaster weekend

Kennedy Maciel armbarred Malachi Edmond in the opening round of the brown belt gi featherweight division in D.C. and took gold in his weight category both gi and no-gi. Stepping up into the absolute division in the no-gi, the featherweight Maciel lost via points to Claiborne, who conquered absolute gold both gi and no-gi.

Simoes shares top spot in San Jose

Yuri Simoes returned to action in the gi at the IBJJF San Jose Open, competing only (but winning gold) in the open class. He beat Victor Silverio in the final. Simoes is based in San Jose where he trains with Caio Terra. The following day he closed out both the weight division and the absolute with his friend and training partner, Adam Sachnoff of 10th Planet.

Servio's submission streak

Servio Tulio had four matches in the middleweight division at the Rio Open and submitted all four of his opponents. Tulio, of Belo Horizonte, is a training partner and student of Felipe Pena. Watch out for Tulio as he competes in the upcoming Marianas Open in Guam on April 20.
