Espen Mathiesen Takes Copenhagen Open In IBJJF Black Belt Debut
Decorated brown belt competitor Espen Mathiesen won both Europeans and Pan Ams in 2017. Over the summer, he received his much-deserved black belt from Jose Carlos and is quickly looking to disrupt the status quo. Known for his modern style and submission heavy attack, Mathiesen is a lot to handle for any foe, but over the weekend he set his sights on Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Norwegian made his IBJJF black belt debut and moved up a weight class to compete in the IBJJF Open on Saturday. As expected, Espen showed why he is one of the brightest prospects coming out of Europe with two submission victories to take the gold.
