Caio Terra-trained brown belt Rudson Mateus won double gold today at the IBJJF 2017 World Championships, and he did so by beating the toughest brown belts in the Worlds.
"I tell you, I didn't feel satisfied after the Pans," said Mateus, who was weight and absolute champion in March at the IBJJF Pans. "Because I didn't feel like I fought the best."
21-year-old Mateus beat out highly-rated Leandro Lo student Gustavo Batista in the medium heavyweight final in a war that ended 10-7 in Mateus's favor.
He said he was "dead" after the match, and almost didn't sign up for the absolute.
"I joked with my friends that I would do the absolute, but only if I could fight the best. I think the organizers at the head table heard me, because today I fought with and beat the best," says Mateus.
In the opening round of the brown belt absolute Mateus beat super heavyweight World champion Gutemberg Pereira of GF Team. He followed it with wins over the heavyweight champ Vinicius Ferreira of Alliance and ultra heavyweight gold medalist Casey Hellenberg of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu, and Finnish grappler Perttu Tepponen of Hilti in the absolute final.
Mateus also expelled the demons of his failed Europeans campaign by submitting River Dillon, the British athlete who beat him in the opening round of the Euros in January.
Rudson has been invited to compete in the prestigious tournament Royal - The Future of Jiu-Jitsu. Following this, he says his coach Caio Terra has already said he will promote him.
"Next week I will fight on Royal, and after -- black belt."
