One of the most exciting things about the IBJJF World Championships is watching the young and hungry breakthrough talents from the ranks of the blue, purple and brown belt divisions. The top colored belts of today are the future black belt world champions of tomorrow.
Not only can you watch the top colored belt athletes in action over the next few days, but many of the top competitors will return to action on June 10 in San Diego, California for the second Royal tournament.
Royal was the brainchild of black belt Joel Tudor, a pro surfer and instructor at Studio 540 (the venue where Royal will take place).
An invite-only event that drew the best talent the colored belt ranks has to offer, Royal mixes blue purple and brown belts together into just three weight classes: light, middle and heavy.
Each division will feature 16 athletes ranging from blue to brown belt. Almost all of them hold major titles, and they come from as far afield as Brail, Europe and Asia.
They will fight in submission-only matches in a closed-door environment under the watchful eye of Tudor. The only way for fans or teammates to see the event live or on demand is on FloGrappling.
The lightweight division features athletes from rooster weight to featherweight. Middleweight showcases athletes from lightweight to medium heavy, while the heavyweight division will see athletes ranging from heavyweight to ultra heavy square off.
The list of invited athletes is below. Follow their performances at the World Championships beginning June 1, and come back on June 10 for Royal.
