The UAEJJF’s final Abu Dhabi Grand Slam event of the season will go down on March 18 in London, UK. With over 800 athletes competing at the prestigious event, the tournament will see Gracie Barra’s Gabriel Arges move up to the 110kg division!
With athletes representing 59 different countries, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in London is the last chance before the Abu Dhabi World Pro in April to win those all-important points for the end-of-season ranking.
And it’s because of the ranking that we’ve seen Arges move up two weight classes from his normal weight of 85kg to 110kg.
Right now, Jose Junior and Gabriel Arges are battling it out for the number one spot. Whoever places highest in the ranking at the end of the season wins $25,000.
Jose Junior has 1490 points, while Arges has 1450.
A gold medal at the Grand Slam is worth 200 points, while silver medal is 160.
If Arges can win gold in the 110kg category and Jose Junior places second, then they’ll be dead even with 1650 points.
That means it all comes down to the Abu Dhabi World Pro, which takes place April 18-22.
A gold medal at the World Pro is worth 400 points. Silver is 320, while bronze is 240.
Arges placed first in his weight category in 2016, while Jose Junior won silver in the absolute.
