A piece of news out of the European Championships that passed many people by was the astounding fact that Joao Miyao got his guard passed for the first time in over three years.

It was the semi-final of the light featherweight division, and Miyao was up against the very tough veteran Gabriel Moraes of Alliance.

Moraes used a very traditional and basic guard pass to go through Miyao's closed guard and into side control. He performed the same move later in the match, but didn't secure position quite long enough to score a second time.

Moraes would win the match 5-4 and go on to meet eventual division winner Michael Musumeci in the final.

The last time we remember anybody passing Joao Miyao's guard was when he was still a brown belt and ultra heavyweight Kaue Damasceno managed to score a rare three points on hi at the Abu Dhabi World Pro.
