Weekend Roundup: Rio Grand Slam, SJJIF Worlds, UFC History, & More!
FloGrappling recaps the top moments from this past weekend, including Danny Gerard winning four gold medals, Rafael Lovato Jr. improving his unbeaten streak, and Conor McGregor making history at UFC 205.
A stacked weekend here on FloGrappling just wrapped up. Let's take a lot at the biggest stories from the weekend.
LIVE on FloGrappling we had both the UAEJJF Rio Grand Slam and the SJJIF World Championships. It was also a giant weekend in the MMA sphere, which held the first pro MMA event in New York with UFC 205.
Danny Gerard Brings Home 4 Gold Medals at SJJIF
One of the most iconic venue's in jiu-jitsu was ablaze with some killer action this past weekend. After two days of the SJJIF at the Walter Pyramid, it was Danny Gerard dominating the black belt competition and walking away with gold medals in both gi and no-gi divisions -- weight and absolute! Stay tuned for all the archived matches coming soon!
Rafael Lovato Jr. Stays Unbeaten In 2016
Rafael Lovato Jr. continued his year of dominance with a third-round armbar to retain his middleweight title at Legacy 62. "The American" beat a much more experienced Cortez Coleman to improve to 4-0. The internet is already abuzz with UFC and Bellator rumors, where would you like to see him fight next?
Rio Grand Slam Delivers With Some High-Level Action!
If you haven't been keeping track, these Grand Slam events being put on by the UAEJJF (which also runs the World Pro every year from Abu Dhabi) are quickly becoming the most exciting tournaments in jiu-jitsu.
This weekend saw many of the top black belts such as Felipe Pena, Xande Ribeiro, Romulo Barral, and Ricardo Evangelista all battle it out for the top spot in the rankings -- a highly coveted position due to the $25,000 payout for whomever finishes No. 1. Currently, Gracie Barra standout Gabriel Arges is doing his best to hold the top spot.
Keep and eye on the rankings as both Jose Junior and Ribeiro are only 20 points away from overtaking Arges.
Conor McGregor Makes History!
If you've been living under a rock, Conor McGregor became the first-ever two weight world champion in UFC history on Saturday night at UFC 205. A remarkable accomplishment for the 28-year-old Irishman who's only been in the UFC for three years. Although McGregor didn't need to show off any of his enigmatic jiu-jitsu skills, we know of course he's been sharpening them up with BJJ world champion Dillon Danis. In fact, it sounds like they both have been teaching each other. Danis sees McGregor as something of a mentor and is even planning on embarking on his own MMA career! Check out our exclusive interview with the "golden boy" of jiu-jitsu.
This weekend promises even more action-packed jiu-jitsu, featuring Fight to Win Pro 18 on Friday, Nov. 18, and ADCC North American Trials on Saturday, Nov. 19, LIVE on FloGrappling!
