Taking a look at the major jiu-jitsu events that went down this last weekend a few points of interest jumped out. Here's your weekend recap, with all the best news from around the world of BJJ.
Heavyweight Rudson Mateus is part of the extended Caio Terra Association. He hails from a small city in the Amazon, but lives in Niteroi (a city across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, much like Oakland is to San Francisco).
Not long turned 21 years old, Mateus isn't well-known outside of Brazil even though he's an IBJJF purple belt world and Brazilian champion.
In Brazil he's one of the top guys in the country, with the results to show for it.
Just this weekend he took triple gold, winning his weight division and the absolute in gi, and his weight division in no-gi (he decided not to compete the absolute).
With plans to get this guy to the US and training alongside Caio in San Jose, who knows what the future has in store for him.
Gabriel Gonzaga Santos Nogueira is his full name, but he's better known just by Gabriel Gonzaga.
Yep, the same Gabriel Gonzaga who knocked out Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC. Who fought Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight title.
Not many people that the 260lb Gonzaga's roots are in jiu-jitsu. He used to fight in the major gi tournaments 15+ years ago against the likes of the legendary Saulo Ribeiro.
And it seems he's still got it. Gonzaga took gold in his division. Considering he's 37 years old it's a pity he's not signed up for Masters Worlds, where he could be among the top guys at masters 2 ultra heavy.
BLACK / Adult / Male / Ultra Heavy
First - Gabriel Gonzaga Santos Nogueira - Squared BJJ
Second - Shaun Robert Durfee - Easton BJJ
Third - Martin Johannes Gobel - GCP Godzilla Competition Project
