If you've never been to a jiu-jitsu tournament in Brazil, let me break it down for you what it's like; it's incredibly hot, ridiculously loud, and a hell of a lot of fun. The IBJJF 2016 Rio Summer Open was no exception.
One of the most important tournaments on the local scene, the Rio Open is a twice-yearly event that brings out the best local talent. It's also a great place to scout for future stars, as the purple and brown belt divisions are always loaded with seriously skilled young up and comers.
Highlights of the day included Nova Uniao's Luan Carvalho taking the gold medal in the light division. His final with the tough Theodoro Canal was somewhat disappointing as the GF Team black belt was forced into a position that shut most of the match down.
Carvalho's semi-final scrap with Calasans BJJ rep Renan Secar was one of the most intense matches of the day, however. Take a look at the highlight below:
In other action Alliance's Fabio Caloi beat Zenith's Victor de Matos in the featherweight division with a nice armlock attack that began from top half guard. We've got the full match right here:
Diego Ramalho of Gracie Barra defeated Atos's Paulo César Ledesma. The match began at a slow pace – usually when competitors go into the 50-50 the match slows down but it was from this position that we actually saw the most action with the finish coming by way of a nice straight ankle lock.
