Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu had a rollercoaster day in Los Angeles yesterday at the Grand Slam, losing his weight category but bouncing back to steamroll the absolute division (openweight).
The Florida-based grappler took out Joseph Moku and Andre Campos in the earlier rounds but fell short against GF Team’s Ricardo Evangelista in the final, losing 10-0.
The disappointing result obviously spurred Cyborg on when the openweight division came around, and he managed to beat Evangelista 4-2 in a rematch in the quarter-finals.
To win gold Cyborg took out 94kg champion Erberth Santos with a choke in the semi-finals before submitting Andre Campos, again with a choke.
By winning the Absolute division of the LA leg of the UAEJJF Grand Slam tour, Abreu walked away with a $1000 cash prize.
