Who Is IN For The IBJJF Brasileiros? Notable Entries At Black Belt

The IBJJF Brazilian National Championship is right around the corner and registration is now closed, with participants having reached over 7,000 (a new record for the event). With the divisions roughly set (tho some may move to a new weight class), it's time to see who is in for one of the year's most prestigious events.

The IBJJF Brazilian National Championship is the third of their four annual major championships, joining the European, Pan, and World Championships. Both Euros and Pans delivered some great action, with thrilling finals rounds and world-class matches every round leading up. With Brasileiros already reaching capacity, I think that's a sign there is a lot of excitement and energy that will translate into an event to remember. The tournament kicks off April 26th and runs through May 4th, with black belts taking the mats the final two days.

There are a ton of great divisions to watch and seven world #'1 in the mix. Just like at Pans, all eyes will be on the heavyweight class when Poland's Adam Wardzinski makes his Brasileiros debut as he takes on a field that includes seven of the top-ten in a single bracket (plus other darkhorses like Nolan Stuart and Gregor Gracie). This may end up being the deepest bracket of the year with entrants like Gustavo Batista, Pedro Machado, Roberto Jimenez, and Leo Ferreira in the mix for gold.

For those on Grand Slam watch, only five black belts have won both Euros and Pans in 2025 and are now entered for Brazilian Nationals. They are:

  • Diego Pato, won at feather, now entered at light-feather
  • Tainan Dalpra, middle
  • Adam Wardzinski, heavy
  • Janaina Maia, light
  • Gabi Pessanha, super-heavy

Because the IBJJF considers the competition calendar to begin at Worlds and end at Brasileiros, Diego, Tainan, Adam, and Gabi can all win the organization's official Grand Slam by taking gold in São Paulo.
