ADCC Opens Update Rules Around Takedowns
The ADCC Opens in North and South America have updated their rules around the kani basami and slams

The ADCC Opens in North and South America have announced new rules for their tournaments, both aimed at increasing safety and removing unnecessary danger from certain situations.
The ADCC's official Instagram announced the rules update today. They are
- The kani basami (scissor takedown) is now ILLEGAL for all divisions EXCEPT adult advanced.
- Slams are now illegal in ALL divisions.
These are both rules that should make the matches are opens safer by taking away two major sources of serious injury. The kani basami carries significant risk of buckling the knee and causing major injury. It's no fault of either party but that amount of leaping body weight is a recipe for eventual disaster. Because of this, only the most challenging divisions (adult advanced) will be entrusted with this technique.
Slams are another common cause of injury, with the significant impact (especially on the head and spinal column) bringing an outsized amount of risk. Slamming your way out of submissions or slamming your way to takedowns will now no longer be allowed, which will keep athletes safer as they compete for the submission. Slams, which cannot truly be applied responsibly regardless of skill level, will therefore be illegal in all divisions.
It's important to note that these updates only affect the Opens in North and South America, with the Trials and other events not changing anything right now.
