Black Belt Day One 2025 Recap: Jimenez Shines In Busy Day At Pans

It was a day packed with high-level jiu-jitsu here at the 2025 Pan Championships, and we have finals set for the absolutes and women's divisions with plenty more to come for the men. There were highlight reel submissions, major upsets, and shakeups in nearly every division. Everything will culminate tomorrow, airing exclusively on FloGrappling starting at 9:30am ET.

The star of the day was Roberto Jimenez who torched his way to the absolute finals with a nearly-reckless pursuit of submissions. He was using throws, jumping armbars, and smooth back takes to stamp his way into the finals of the open. There he will meet Gutemberg Pereira, the big man from AOJ who was impressive as well - especially in a points win over World Champion Batista from Atos in the semifinal.

One of the biggest stories of the day was certainly Thaynara Victoria's upset over #2 pound-for-pound Mayssa Bastos. Thaynara was able to even the score late with an advantage and then took it on judge's decision in a shocking result. She now faces Mayssa's teammate Shelby in the finals tomorrow, but has already made her stamp on this division heading into Worlds and beyond. Also in the women's divisions, Elisabeth Clay was upset in her first gi tournament back after she took a first round loss to Gisele Tavares.

Keep an eye on the team title, AOJ is currently in strong position to win if they close tomorrow strongly and they have the horses to do it. They will be relying on their stars like Gutemberg Pereira, Tainan Dalpra, Diego Pato, and Cole Abate who are all in the quarters. In fact, Cole has a great early match tomorrow with World Champion Samuel Nagai to make the podium. Nagai also looked on point with a canto choke win to begin his campaign here.

Keep an eye out for some incredible women's finals, including a major one between Luiza Monteiro and Janaina Maia. Maia won Euros and looked ready for another gold medal run before the 2024 World Champion ended her retirement and looked on fire here today, including a 50 second submission win in her return match.

There were definitely some good fights and sick submissions today as well. In my opinion the match of the day was Ethan Roy and Fabyury Khrysthyan in the lightweight class. They scored 20 points before Fabyury scored was able to snatch the kneebar in dramatic fashion. Matheus Gabriel looked good in his return to action at Pans as well, defeating Danilo Moreira and advancing to the quarters.
