2025 Grand Slam Watch: Who Has Got A Chance This Year?
2025 Grand Slam Watch: Who Has Got A Chance This Year?
Who are the athletes who won Euros and are in for Pans? Only a dozen are still eligible for the honor in 2025.

Every year, a line of champions take their shot at joining the prestigious list of Grand Slam winners. They are black belt competitors who have won all of the 4 IBJJF majors and only nine have ever done it. Will anyone be able to accomplish the feat in 2025?

With the European Championships complete and the registrations closed for Pans, we now can narrow down the list of potential Grand Slam athletes to those who won in Lisbon and entered in Orlando. There are only one dozen black belts still capable of winning both Euros and Pans - and we broke down who they are and their chances of winning.
Men's Rooster - Yuri Hendrix
Yuri was a somewhat surprising gold medalist at Euros but once the top seeded Thalison dropped out he was the big beneficiary on his way to major success. This is a sign that his recent move to Melqui Galvão JJ is a good one for his career and he was smart and strategic on his run in Lisbon. I still think it will be tough for him to repeat with an even deeper field at Pans. Bebeto, the 2024 World Champ, is in the mix along with Jalen Fonacier (who was close at Euros) and four other top-15 athletes.
Men's Light-Feather - Diogo Reis
The Baby Shark is on a mission this year for Grand Slam gold and things have gone well so far with a great showing in Lisbon. With a similar field at Pans, he will be tested (8 other top-15 grapplers will be in the mix) but Shark's top work and increased focus on the arm triangle make him the favorite to keep the campaign for that rare Grand Slam honor alive.
Men's Feather - Diego Oliveira
Pato is back and the #1 pound-for-pound gi athlete is the favorite to win anything he enters right now. After a great performance at Euros where he beat Kennedy Maciel in the finals, he now slides in here to face off with top names like Sam Nagai. One major matchup to watch is him against teammate Cole Abate. Since Abate doesn't have many major points in his young black belt career, it's possible they could meet early in the bracket.
Men's Middle - Tainan Dalpra
Tainan is the one guy in the field who has done it before, having won the Grand Slam in 2022. After stumbling at the last two Worlds and the Crown last year (by way of injury), Tainan is back to IBJJF competition with the express purpose of winning another Grand Slam. He got it done at Euros and faces a similar field at Pans, with familiar foe Andy Murasaki in the way as a likely finals opponent.
Men's Heavy - Adam Wardzinski
The Polish butterfly king is keeping his positive momentum going with an entry here at the lone gi tournament he lost in 2024. Last season it was Pedro Machado submitting Adam, so look for that rematch if they hit. Also in the way will be world champion Gustavo Batista (whom Adam beat at The Crown in a close match) and Roberto Jimenez.
Men's Super-Heavy - Windson Torres
Windson was a surprise champion in Lisbon but was very impressive in victory. Now, the rookie black belt sets his sights on following that up with more gold. His division is pretty light as far as top-end talent so there's actually a good chance Windson can go 2/2 on majors to start his black belt career. That would be quite the statement.
Women's Rooster - ThaÃs Loureiro
ThaÃs has really broken out on the scene in the last year or so, and moved herself from perennial podium contender to perennial championship contender. She closed the show in the Euro finals with a foot lock submission that was very impressive and she has a good chance of repeating her gold medal run here. Rooster is always tough because the styles are usually so similar but there's no reason to bet against her.
Women's Light Feather - Mayssa Bastos
Mayssa is one of three people on this list who has already done the Grand Slam and she started her year at Euros very strong. She was sick in Lisbon but still dominated her way to gold. Mayssa is the favorite in any bracket she enters but she has taken losses before up at light-feather (like at Euros last season). If she does all four tournaments this year, it's likely she Grand Slams.
Women's Feather - Larissa Campos
Larissa scored the January submission of the month in Lisbon when she stormed her way to a bow and arrow victory. The 2024 world medalist has really started to hit her stride as an AOJ athlete and she has a solid chance here to repeat, but potential showdowns with Cassia Moura, Maria Luiza, and Vitoria Assis loom.
Women's Light - Janaina Maia
I think Janaina has one of the best shots of anyone to grand slam this year given the composition of the weight, and she enters here as the favorite to keep that run going. She won Pans last year too and in her way will be familiar foes like Jaine Fragoso and Amanda Bruse.
Women's Middle - Vannessa Griffin
Vannessa was the lone American to win in Lisbon and as such she is the only American who can Grand Slam this year. Middleweight is deep but she is really technically and strategically sound so she has all the tools to win at Pans. In her way will be some tough names like Elisabeth Clay who is returning to the gi.
Women's Super-Heavy - Gabi Pessanha
At this point, you can just assume Gabi will double gold everywhere she goes until someone scores an enormous upset. She's the best female grappler we have ever seen and I could bet my car on her winning another double Grand Slam and never lose any sleep.
