IBJJF European Championship Finals
Luis Cantereira and Leo Ferreira are back out now, one will get gold and one will get silver. Cantereira will sweep up to top, he's much larger than his opponent here. This has to be a crazy reversal, they had about three minutes to get mentally prepared. Luis picks up a second penalty, another puts Leo in the lead. The fight ends and Cantereira is the double gold champion here despite taking a loss yesterday. Crazy.
Men's open class. This one is really good early, both men are jockeying hard for top position. It's nearly judo-like, big exchanges on the feet. They both pick up a third penalty off of stall calls, even though both are working hard. Carrozzino is up after some near takedowns. They try to DQ Marcos for a push out of bounds, but that is overruled. With a minute left, Scooby pulls closed guard. Wow - with fifteen seconds left they stop the match and double DQ. Now, the open class semifinal losers will face for gold. It's a crazy scene at the moment.
Absolute finals only left. First up is the Yara vs Gabi rematch, they have met many times. Gabi hops on an ankle and then an arm but can't get the submission. Yara surviving here. Over halfway through, this is as close as anyone fights Gabi so far. Ah, well there's the tap. Gabi wins by straight ankle lock. Still, Yara got much deeper into the match and this can be an encouraging performance. Gabi double gold, no shocker here, she's the best we've ever seen.
Our final divisional final is up, ultra-heavy between Hygor Brito and Luis Cantereira. Cantereira is patient from top until he finally works to a leg drag. Brito turtles, Luis sinks in the choke, he gets the tap! He wins his first major gold medal at black belt with the finish. Incredible run from him.
Super-heavy finals are up and it's Windson and Pedro Lucas. Unfortunately early on they go through the scoring table and we need a new TV to display the scores leading to a long pause in action. Things are back underway now. It's Windson working from top, Pedro Lucas from bottom. Windson is applying crazy pressure and passes to side control - then mount! He gets the smother and the tap! Windson, a rookie black belt, is the Euro champion.
Heavy is up, and Adam is center stage against Leo Ferreira. It's Leo pulling guard and Adam working from top as he controls pants. He's definitely working some more stacks than usual. Ferreira explodes up with a leg and sweeps Adam, putting himself up 2-0 in the first minute. A near pass and back take is two more advantages for the Brazilian. Things are getting tense in here. On a restart, Leo pulls again but now a deep pressure knee slice gets Adam all the way to mount! He blows the score open with his top game. He takes the back too to add four more and then once Leo goes belly-down he snatches the collar choke for the submission win. Adam is a rock star.
At medium-heavy, it's a close out between the brothers - an incredible run. The crowd doesn't like it at first but quickly begins cheering them.
Time for a big one, Tainan vs Andy in a rematch of a World finals. Double pull, Andy comes up for the advantage. Tainan works his guard, gets under Andy and into the 50/50. He's able to sweep and clear the leg. Andy has one more advantage than Tainan but is down by two - one minute left. They stand and Tainan pulls again, he will take this one off those two points from the sweep.
Lightweight time. Leonardo Souza vs Lucas Protasio. Protasio uses a takedown to get an early score, the crowd is hot for this match. Lucas scores another takedown, he's ahead 4-0 now. now Leo comes up and catches a clock choke from the back - it's vicious and Protasio goes out! Leonardo Souza wins lightweight.
Feather is up, Kennedy vs Pato. Some double pulls early, and Kennedy hops on a nasty foot lock - but Pato escapes. Kennedy finally comes up after some pulling penalties and he leads by an advantage. Pato gets the lapel, he uses the squid guard and sweeps to top with a few minutes left. Now Kennedy gets the lapel back himself, he has a single leg with twenty seconds left - he jumps the back but can't get it! Pato wins, incredible.
Light-feather is up now. Diogo Reis and Shoya Ishiguro. Double pull, Diogo comes up and he will get the advantage. Diogo working from the outside and using the leg drag well to force action and score another advantage. He's changing direction, changing intensities, and keeping Ishiguro on the defensive. Three left. The exchanges continue including another near-pass but nothing on the scoreboard, Diogo Reis wins Euros.
We are onto the men's finals with Yuri Hendrix facing Jalen Fonacier. They double pull and get penalties, but not before Jalen rips a toe hold for an advantage. Another double pull, another penalty for each. One more double pull and now Jalen comes up for another advantage. Yuri comes up finally but into a near armbar and almost gets to the crab ride, Jalen looks amazing here. He's up 5-1 on advantages, but now trailing 2-0 on points. Two minutes left, Jalen still trailing on points but any score would put him in the lead. From his single leg X, he kicks Yuri into a cross ashi and then scores as he scores up! No - they wipe it away and Yuri will hold on! Video review now - call upheld, Yuri takes rooster.
Yara and Gabi now meet in the super-heavy finals. They trade leg locks until Pessanha finally snatches a straight ankle and gets the finish! The streak continues. It's easy to become used to her dominance, but it's important to keep in mind that what she is doing is truly unique.
Heavy is up. Mel Cueto taking on Izadora Silva. Mel is working from top, Alves from bottom. A near pass from Melissa, she gets the advantage. She's managing the match well, Silva can't get anything started. Time ends, Melissa is the winner and the champion! She repeats her performance from last year, winning over the same opponent.
Medium-heavy, a pair of world class contenders here in Ingridd Alves and Aurelie Le Vern. Aurelie working from top, trying to pressure in. Ingridd in a flash swivels for the armbar and she is able to work her way to the finish after nearly a minute of cranking on the limb. Incredible grit from Aurelie, but it's Ingridd's day!
Middleweight finals, Vannessa Griffin and Vitoria Gabriela. It's a super close match, Vannessa nearly finishes things off with a kneebar but Gabriela nearly passes, everything is tied. The match ends and we go to a decision, our first of the finals. Griffin wins! Her near sub is enough to make the difference and she wins her first ever black belt major title.
Janaina and Stéphanie Delphine are up, Stéphanie a native European. Stéphanie fighting hard but she does give up a sweep and the mount, but escapes a lot of pressure to get back on top - though Janaina is up 6-0. Janaina working well with her lapel guards and closed guard, taking advantage of any opening to cinch into her opponent more. The fight will end here and Janaina secures her first major title of the year.
Larissa Campos and Vitoria Assis are up now. It's a close, tense match - until Campos opens up a back take and finds a choke in transition! The subs are rolling here, Campos is the champion! Crazy finish, make sure to check that one out.
Back-to-back finishes! In a rematch of last year's final, Mayssa Bastos doesn't waste any time. She is on the back, she snatches the choke, and that's it! Bastos is the most dominant women's force outside of Pessanha, no question.
Thais Lourerio starts us off with a bang! She navigates her way into the straight ankle lock and finishes things in the first minute. She has been on a tear and adds another major championship to her collection.
Ok the mats are clear and we are beginning. Nineteen more matches for black belt adult gold.
Men's Quarterfinals & Semifinals
Finals are beginning very soon, head over to the live streams to watch everything live.
Marcus Scooby makes his way out to rematch Luis Cantereira, he beat him yesterday in open class. Cantereira with short time left nearly takes the back, that's enough for two advantages and he secures back his win - he's into the finals and Scooby's double gold quest ends there. Speaking of, Carrozzino (his open class opponent) also loses his semifinal to Pedro Lucas. No double gold here for the men. In the final semi, Hygor Brito wins on an advantage after holding off a late flurry.
A pair of European-based grapplers, Matheus Vetoraci and Bruno Lima in the finals. Matheus already has his twin brother in the finals of this weight. Matheus passes off of a guard pull and he's up on points, crazy. He is into the finals, so is his twin brother, and they will face off for gold today.
Now Adam out as well, action is coming quick. He's in a rematch of his World final, taking on Vinicius Liberati. It's much closer than it was in the pyramid, and Adam scores the only advantage of the match to advance to another Euros final. He's had some close ones today, with a big target on his back.
Tainan is up again in the semifinals against Rafael Borges. On the other mat, Davi Vetoraci is taking on Uanderson Ferreira. Wow - with short time left he navigates his way to a straight ankle lock. That gives him an advantage which is the only score - he wins! Big upset! Tainan in his semifinal sweeps up, moves to the leg drag, and is applying deep pressure. Borges finally turtles and Dalpra is right to the back and to the finish.
Semifinals for the heavier weights take the mat now and begin with Murasaki/Goteu. Andy working from top and he uses his half guard passing to move to mount and score a major 7 points. He continues to pin and pass and pours on another 10, he's up 17-0 then scores the arm triangle win. Dominant, Andy looks great. In one of our final ultra-heavy quarters, Hygor comes back to beat Tacio Alves, that's a big win for him.
Long blood stoppage in the Leo Ferreira/Arthan match. Ferreira had a great run through purple and brown belt but has been injured a lot as an early black belt, but he looks awesome here as he goes ahead 2-0. He goes on to win and he faces Rider next round. Marcos Carrozzino, who is in the open class finals, begins his quarterfinal at super-heavy. Luis Cantereira moves on at ultra-heavy by no-show, he faces Marcus Scooby who makes short work of his quarterfinal.
I thought things got loud - then Adam came to the mats. This place is defeaning for him. On the other mat at heavy, Rider Zuchi passes his way to mount in the final minute to pour on points and secure a podium spot. Adorian of RGA, who is facing Adam, sweeps to top position to lead early. Adam sweeps his way back to top using that vaunted butterfly guard but still trails by an advantage. Adam working on passing, he's using stacks and knee cuts but Adorian's guard is very solid. Finally he forces the turtle and sinks in his hooks to put himself up 6-2. Adam will win in a match that was tougher than expected.
Tainan takes the mat, he's got the goal of a Grand Slam this year. He looks like he's on a mission when he takes the back and gets the choke in short order to advance. Really impressive from the AOJ stalwart. Crowd getting crazy now, we have two European brothers in the quarters and this place is coming alive. The Vetoracis. Davi and Matheus both win, they are in the semifinals and the crowd erupts! Crazy story from the pair. Also in the semifinals will be Bruno Lima of Portugal, who advances to a major podium in his home country. Medium-heavy is very European heavy this year. The final semifinalist will be Uanderson Ferreira, the likely favorite for gold.
With the lighter half of weights set, we now move to middle and up with Andy taking on Gabriel Galvão in an interesting quarter. Gabriel sweeps his way to top, Andy responds but they go out of bounds - Gabriel gets 2 points and Andy the advantage. Andy finally is able to work his way to top and he now leads overall.
Pato's semifinal begins. He finds the back within thirty seconds from the crab ride, applies the choke, and is into the finals. Wow! All together, a little over 40 seconds in a black belt major semifinal.
Pedro Maia and Protasio back up, Pedro pulls and Lucas is aggressive from top. A near pass does earn Protasio an advantage, he leads now. the fight keeps developing but no scoring, and eventually Protasio is able to ride out that win. Long blood stoppage for Souza/Saboia. Finally they restart and a surprising triangle gets the tap for Souza, he's into the finals.
Close, close match between the Baby Shark and Leonardo Mario, Diogo will use the 2 points from a sweep to win but he was really fending off attacks here to keep that lead. He is into the finals where he will have Shoya. Kennedy is back up, he falls down 2-0 but then uses a back take to lead 4-2 and earn that win. He's into the finals again!
With the first half of the quarters done, we will now roll into the lighter semifinals, then the heavier quarters and semis. Andrew Soares and Jalen Fonacier are in a tough one, Andrew comes up in the double pull but they are stuck in the leg drag for minutes. Jalen earns back that advantage and another for a near-sweep, putting him ahead and giving him the win. He's into the finals his rookie black belt year.
Still rolling at lightweight, some really solid matches going on now. Lucas Protasio and Sandrey Silva on one mat, Thiago Saboia and Kevin Mahecha on the other. Protasio will score a sweep and they reset, a nice early lead for him. Lucas is pouring it on with two more takedowns, he's up 6-0. In a much closer contest, Saboia wins by an advantage. He will face Leonardo Souza, who wins his quarter with a guillotine choke.
Lightweight is up now and the man to watch is Pedro Maia. He's up 3-0 early on a guard pass but he is being ultra-aggressive still. He ends up finishing things up 8-0 with 3 advantages. In our last featherweight quarter, Sebastian Serpa is down and won't be able to even it up as he loses to Minho Yoon. Last year Serpa came here and upset Doederlein, now he's the one upset. Yoon has Pato next round, tough assignment.
Featherweight is up now, a weight everyone has been buzzing about. Cole vs Kennedy in a marquee matchup here in the quarters. Cole pulls but gets a penalty - twice. That's huge, now Kennedy leads by an advantage and two penalties. Cole sweeps with about seven left, now he needs to hold top position. With only a few minutes left, Kennedy manages to come back up and now he's ahead again. Cole needs something major - he sweeps and comes up but Kennedy turtles - Cole jumps the back but time expires! No points, those early penalties are the deciding factor. Kennedy wins and advances.
On the other feather mat, Pato does his thing and uses a back take from the leg drag to secure 4 points and then the submission. Him and Kennedy may be set for a finals collision.
At light-feather, it's a close decision after an 8-8 sweeping marathon between Frank Cespedes and Leonardo Mario - and Mario takes it to advance to the podium. Diogo Reis out now, he's in a match with Yuma Nomura. He's able to get the submission win by armbar and advance. On the other black belt mat, Shoya Ishiguro uses a late sweep to pick up the win over Juninho, securing his own medal and a semifinal against Shark.
At roosterweight, Jalen Fonacier - who has trained with Cobrinha basically his whole life - starts us off with the first submission of the day, a choke from the back.. He will be in the semifinals. On the other mat, Yuri Hendrix beats Danforth in a very tactical bout by one advantage. Because of the dropouts in the bracket, he actually advances all the way to the finals and there will be no second bronze medalist in the division. Our final semifinalist will be Andrew Soares, who also scores a nice submission from the back. Our lone semifinal at rooster will be Andrew Soares vs Jalen Fonacier, winner faces Yuri Hendrix.
