The action was intense and elite at the IBJJF European Championships 2025 as the black belts finally had their first matches, with the absolute and women’s finals already set and the men’s divisional eliminatory matches done.

The men's absolute final will be two men trying to claim their first IBJJF major open class title, with Marcus "Scooby' Ribeiro and Marcos Carrozzino in the finals after their paths through the absolute. Should Carrozzino win, he will be the first GFTeam black belt male to win an open class title at a major since 2011 (Rodolfo Vieira at Worlds). Also on the podium are Leonardo Ferreira of Alliance and Luis Cantereira of Fratres.

Gabi Pessanha again blazed her way to two finals, both against Yara Soares of Fratres. She continues to show new wrinkles to her game, including a smother choke against Giovanna Jara in the absolute. She’s all subs to this point and looks to continue her dominance against Soares (whom she has faced in many gold medal matches). Also on the absolute podium will be Amanda Schurtz of Switzerland and Alliance’s Mel Cueto, who tomorrow will face familiar foe Izadora Silva in the heavyweight finals.

Matches tomorrow kick off at 9:30 a.m. local time, which is 3:30 a.m. central standard time in the US. Quarters and semifinals for men will roll through until finals are set, when all finals will kick off in order of women-men-open class, lightest to heaviest. All of the mats will be streamed exclusively on FloGrappling.

The men's elimination rounds are also done, with most of the top stars advancing but a few key upsets throughout the day also keeping things rolling. Thankfully, the featherweight bracket that everyone is so excited for kept shape as all the top stars advance. We will get Kennedy Maciel vs Cole Abate right off the bat tomorrow in the quarterfinals. If Cole can win that, it would be an enormous sign of improvement from last year when he lost first round at Worlds. In fact, if he does win that match, he could see the man who beat him in the pyramid in the semifinals (Florian Bayili of Belgium).

In my mind, no division was more shaken up by upsets than light-feather where the 2024 World silver and 2024 World No-Gi Champion both lost first round on the same side of the bracket. This is great news for Baby Shark Diogo Reis, who sits on the other side in the quarters and will finally compete again in the gi tomorrow. Another major upset was rookie black belt Thiago Saboia picking up a close win over Pablo Lavaselli, who medaled here last year. Hopes are high that Alliance's Saboia can develop into a true world-contending talent.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, there is a lot that can unfold, but we are in for some great action and storylines. Some matches to watch early would definitely include Andy Murasaki vs Gabriel Galvão, Kennedy vs Cole, Sandrey Silva vs Lucas Protasio, and more. We're also slated for Antonio Braga Neto, a legend in his own right, to take the mats at ultra-heavy against Luis Cantereira in a clash of generations.
