Wardzinski Caps Off Stellar Year With A Crown | Full IBJJF The Crown Recap
Plus, Diego Pato puts stamp on featherweight division, Gabrielli Pessanha & Erich Munis remain undefeated at the Crown, Murasaki & Ste-Marie come up big.
Adam Wardzinski continued the momentum in his historic season, winning the dangerous heavyweight division at IBJJF's second annual edition of IBJJF's The Crown presented by FloGrappling at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
In the final, Wardzinski, a Checkmat representative, defeated the reigning IBJJF medium heavyweight champion Gustavo Batista on an advantage scored in the final two minutes of the ten-minute bout.
It's his second major performance this year under the lights at the Walter Pyramid, as earlier this year, Wardzinski — from Poland — became the first European male to win an IBJJF black belt Worlds title.
Wardzinski appeared to be fitting into his role as a world champion, with two stellar performances on his road to the title. In the quarterfinal he defeated Mateus Spirandelli 9-2 with a demonstration of pressure; and in the semifinal he defeated Horlando Monteiro via collar choke from the back, after racking up points with his dominant guard passing.
After earning his Crown title, Wardzinski teased at setting his belt on the mat, a sign of retirement, before strapping his belt back around his waist and teasing at his 2025 goals to earn an IBJJF Grand Slam.
Pato defeated João Mendes in the final via collar choke from the back after several minutes of stalemate. In the quarterfinal, he defeated 2019 featherweight world champion Jamil Hill-Taylor by an 18 point margin. In the opening round, Pato defeated featherweight legend Osvaldo Queixinho 6-4.
After a successful outing in a higher weight category, Pato hinted at plans to move to featherweight for the 2025 season to "mess the division up."
Pessanha showed calculated work from the closed guard, often using it to sweep to dominant position. From there, she often bypassed the neck, and finished her chokes against her opponents' faces or jaws. The victory only bolsters her status as the most dominant female competitor in IBJJF history. The multiple-time Grand Slam winner is on a run of more than 120 victories without a loss.
Erich Munis has proven equally dominant at the Crown, winning his second Crown title in the ultra heavyweight division in as many attempts.
Munis picked up two submissions in three bouts, including an ezekiel choke in the final over Marcus Scooby. In the quarterfinal, he picked up a footlock over Krystof Szucs. The only competitor who survived submission by Munis was Pedro Machado, whom Munis defeated by a score of 15-6.
Brianna Ste-Marie had a carer best performance in her black belt gi competition record at the Crown, collecting the title in the women's lightweight division with a buzzer-beater victory over 2024 Pans champion Janaina Lebre.
Lebre controlled the pace early in the match, but — with one advantage lead with two minutes remaining — dropped back for a leg lock, leaving a counter attack open for the savvy Ste-Marie. That allowed Ste-Marie to close the score deficit and come on top, picking up the go-ahead advantage.
Earlier in her performance, Ste-Marie found a cross collar choke from closed guard against 2021 world champion Gabi McComb, and in the quarterfinal, put up 14 points against Jaine Fragroso.
Andy Murasaki had an anticlimactic ending to his Crown-winning run, winning the final by default after Tainan Dalpra sustained a broken hand earlier in the event.
Murasaki impressed on his road to the final, defeating Jaime Canuto 7-0 in the quarterfinal before earning an armbar victory in the closing 30 seconds of his semifinal bout against Mauricio Oliveira.
Murasaki, who has won silver medals at Worlds in the lightweight, middleweight, and medium heavyweight divisions, discussed his intentions to remain in the middleweight division in 2025 following his victory.
