What Is The Crown? IBJJF's Premier Show Is Back

The IBJJF's big new show is back as The Crown returns for 2024, with a lot to be excited about for the invitation-only show that goes down in the Walter Pyramid on November 17th. Last year saw six champions earn the right to wear The Crown and now in 2024 we will have rivalries, 2024 World Champions in the same brackets, and some of the most exciting black belts in the world ready to put on a show.

What Is IBJJF's The Crown?

The Crown is an invitation-only show where the best and most exciting black belts meet for a chance at both glory and tens of thousands in prize money. In total, there is over $250,000 in prize money being given out that night, equal for all divisions.

This is a big prize and the best in the world want their chance to win, meaning these divisions are all stacked. The divisions are;

  • Men's Featherweight (70kg/154lbs)
  • Men's Middleweight (82.3kg/181bs)
  • Men's Heavyweight (94.3kg/208lbs)
  • Men's Ultra-Heavyweight (Unlimited)
  • Women's Lightweight (62.8kg/138.5lbs)
  • Women's Super-Heavy (Unlimited)

Who Is Competing At The 2024 Crown?

The entrants this year are headlined by champions like Diego Pato, Adam Wardzinski, Gabi Pessanha, and more. You can find a full list of entrants here.

How Much Does The Crown Pay?

The IBJJF is paying out over $250,000 in cash prizes in one night at The Crown, which is an incredible figure for a single event. All athletes will be paid show money and the championship payouts are:

  • Champion - $20,000
  • Runner-Up - $5,000
  • Third Place - $3,000
  • Fourth Place - $2,500

How Will The Crown Work?

The Crown will be held at the Walter Pyramid, one of the most prestigious jiu-jitsu venues in the world, on November 17th. It will be eight-person brackets, with the early action running on two mats before coming together to a single mat. Losers of the semifinals will meet for the third place, if they are able. Commentary will be available for every match, with some early action streaming live to our YouTube channel.

What Are Some Of The Biggest Matches We Could See?

We could see a lot of big matches at The Crown, especially because the weight classes are condensed - along with the talent. A few potential matches to watch out for include;

  • Diego Pato vs Kennedy Maciel
  • Tainan Dalpra vs Andy Murasaki
  • Adam Wardzinski vs Gustavo Batista
  • Erich Munis vs Gutemberg Pereira
  • Gabi Pessanha vs Nathiely de Jesus
  • Brianna Ste-Marie vs Janaina Maia

There's also a few very talented up-and-comers who could use this event to break out, including the 18-year-old phenom Cassia Moura who went from blue to black belt in only one year. She's young and much less experienced at this level than some of the other women but she is as talented as they come. Other young black belts to watch include Felipe 'Laranjinha' Costa, Gabriel Galvão, Elijah Dorsey, and Thaynara Victoria.

Reigning Champs

There are 3 black belts attempting to repeat as champions at The Crown, winning last year and entering this year in the same division. They are;

  • Tainan Dalpra, Men's Middleweight
  • Erich Munis, Men's Ultra-Heavyweight
  • Gabi Pessanha, Women's Super-Heavyweight

In addition to repeating her title, Pessanha brings an incredible 141-match winning streak into this event. Should she win her bracket, she would extend that to 144 victories in a row - with an incredible amount ending by submission.

World Champions In Attendance

There are a variety of IBJJF World Champions in the event, a mark of the depth of athlete involved. In fact, half of the women's super-heavy division will be former world champions! Five of the six divisions have at least one former World gold medalist. The World Champions in the event are scheduled to be;

  • Diego Oliveira, Men's Featherweight, 3-time World Champion
  • Jamil Hill-Taylor, Men's Featherweight, 1-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Tainan Dalpra, Men's Middleweight, 2-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Adam Wardzinski, Men's Heavyweight, 1-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Gustavo Batista, Men's Heavyweight, 3-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Erich Munis, Men's Ultra-Heavyweight, 4-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Gabrielli Pessanha, Women's Super Heavyweight, 8-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Nathiely de Jesus, Women's Super Heavyweight, 4-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Melissa Cueto, Women's Super Heavyweight, 2-time IBJJF World Champion
  • Tamiris Silva, Women's Super Heavyweight, 1-time IBJJF World Champion
