Luiza Monteiro Headlines Lightweight Field At IBJJF Crown
World Champion Luiza Monteiro will return to defend her title at The Crown, in a bracket that includes Brianna Ste-Marie, Cassia Moura, and more
The field is set at The Crown for lightweight, with all eight participants announced on Instagram last week by the IBJJF. The bracket will be headlined by defending Crown champion and reigning World champion Luiza Monteiro, who announced her retirement from Worlds after taking gold. Now she will return to the Pyramid for perhaps the last time with one last chance at the top of the podium.
The Crown goes down November 17th and will streamed exclusively on FloGrappling.
- Luiza Monteiro
- Luiza is the top dog here, with a long history of winning championships at the highest level. This event last year helped reignite her campaign for World gold, and with her career close to an end she is still at the top of her game.
- Janaina Maia
- Janaina had an up-and-down year in 2024, winning Pans and looking ready to contend for World gold until an early-DQ loss to Fragoso ended her campaign. Now she gets a chance to finish the year with a statement as the AOJ fighter prepares for her second appearance at The Crown.
- Brianna Ste-Marie
- BSM is always in the mix in the gi and had a very impressive run at Worlds this year, finishing second behind Luiza. The Canadian ace from BTT has been one of the most consistent performers of the last few years and has a fan-friendly style that emphasizes submission offense.
- Cassia Moura
- Cassia is a real wildcard here, as she becomes the youngest and newest black belt to ever appear at The Crown. She went from blue to black belt in only one year - and now almost immediately she steps into elite level competition. If she is able to win even one match it would be a stunning announcement that she is coming for the top.
- Margot Ciccarelli
- Margot had a great 2024, winning her first IBJJF major at black belt by capturing gold at Euros and medaling at Worlds at featherweight after a close match with Tata Ribeiro. Margot is moving up from her normal division of feather to light, but she is as technical and strategic as anyone here.
- Jaine Fragoso
- Jaine Fragoso was able to medal for the first time at Worlds this year, finally breaking through with her style of aggressive foot locking. While she usually has better results in no-gi, her gi game has come a long way and she will be a real factor for upsets.
- Vitoria Vieira
- Vitoria is this year's Brasileiros champion who has looked better than ever in 2024, including a win over Brianna Ste-Marie and a silver medal at Euros. Still, she has had several losses this year and it's hard to predict how she will do. Real darkhorse in this class.
- Vitoria Assis
- Vitoria is one of the most exciting athletes at featherweight, and she moves up here to lightweight with the intention of putting on a show in her first Crown appearance.
