History Made: ADCC Records & Stats From 2024

With the 2024 ADCC World Championships coming to a close, there's a lot to appreciate about the tournament. A lot of history was made in a lot of different ways, including records broken and firsts that have been in the works for years. Here's over a dozen interesting stats that we think are worth remembering about the incredible event.

Youngest To The Top

Mica Galvao accomplished his 2024 goal and won the Super Grand Slam - all four IBJJF Majors and the ADCC World Championships. Coming into the event, he had only had a few months of dedicated no-gi training but was still able to navigate his way to the ADCC gold.

There's only one other person to ever do the SGS and that was Cobrinha in 2017. Cobrinha won this at the very end of his career, but Mica is doing so at only 20 years old. With so many major tournaments already conquered - what is next for the Manaus star?

Kaynan Dominates To Historic Level

Kaynan really ran through ADCC, winning 8 matches for double gold with seven finishes. Statistically, it's the most dominant ADCC run since Roger Gracie went a perfect 8-for-8 in 2007. Kaynan is now set to face Gordon Ryan in 2026, provided Gordon is healthy enough to defend his championship.

Atos Makes History With 6 Golds

Atos had an unreal run at ADCC 2024, with six gold medals coming from their squad - provided you count Felipe Pena who had done his camp there. While you can note that there was two additional brackets this year with a new women's weight class and the women's absolute, they still won 60% of the tournament - with an overall record of 24-8, with sixteen submissions.

Gordon Breaks His Own Points Record

Gordon won his super fight against Yuri Simoes by a margin of 21-0, using back tracking to run up the score against his foe. In doing so, Gordon broke the points record for the super fight - one that he himself set in 2022 against Andre Galvao with 12. The record before that was Galvao's 11 against Calasans.

Bodoni First Back-To-Back At -88kg

Giancarlo Bodoni was the surprise champion in 2022, beating established names like Diniz and Barbosa to claim gold. Here in 2024 he was the established veteran who had to hold off hungry contenders like Felipe Costa and Jay Rodriguez. It's no small feat that he was able to do this - in fact he is the first to ever go back-to-back in this weight class.

The only other guy to win -88kg more than once is Saulo Ribeiro, who won in 2000 and 2003 but not 2001. If Bodoni is able to repeat again in 2026, he will likely go down as the best ever at this weight class.

First Ever Australian Champion

There's a lot of ways to consider Adele's performance but the most historically significant may be that she is the first ever Australian champion - and she did it twice in the same event! When it rains, it pours. Adele had a star-making run with four submissions in six victories to claim her titles.

Australia had two medalists ever previous to 2024, Craig Jones and Lachlan Giles, but has long been recognized as a bubbling hotbed of grappling talent. This performance only furthers the fact that Australian jiu-jitsu is on the rise.

Second Ever Asian Trials Gold Medalist

To put it into perspective how rare a victory like Adele's is, she is the second ever athlete to win Asian Trials and then take gold that same Worlds. The first was, ironically, also the -55kg champion in 2007 (the only other time they ran that division) Sayaka Shioda.

Ana Carolina Makes History With Gold

Ana Carolina Vieira made history in multiple ways with her gold medal at -65kg. The Aviv Jiu-Jitsu representative joins her wife Luanna Alzuguir in becoming the first married couple to have won ADCC gold, with Luanna winning in 2009 at -60kg. She also joins her brother Rodolfo in becoming the first brother/sister pair to have won ADCC gold, with Rodolfo claiming the -99kg division in 2015.

11 Former Medalists Didn't Make Day Two

In a sign of how tough ADCC is and how much time two years really can be, eleven former medalists failed to place top-4 this year in their divisions. This includes four from 2022 and three former gold medalists.

None was more shocking than Pixley over Meregali. Michael is the first person to submit Meregali since Edwin Najmi, in the purple belt open class finals at Worlds.

The Three Oldest Grapplers Took Silver

In an interesting statistical blip, the three oldest grapplers in the tournament, Rafael Lovato Jr., Cyborg, and Vagner Rocha, all took silver in one of their divisions. Cyborg also took bronze at -99kg to go along with his absolute silver. All three relied on a wrestling-heavy approach to advance past younger competition on their way to the finals.

Youngest Medalist Ever

Helena Crevar made history by becoming the youngest medalist ever, only 17 when she took silver in the -65kg bracket. Helena has long been a can't-miss prospect, competing well beyond her years as part of the New Wave team. Now, she is in the record books, replacing Kade & Tye Ruotolo who previously held the distinction together.

Highest Submission Rates In Divisions

  • Men's +99kg: 9/16, 56.25%
  • Men's -99kg: 9/16, 56.25%
  • Men's Absolute: 7/16, 43.75%
  • Women's Absolute: 3/7 (no bronze medal match), 42.86%
  • Men's -66kg: 6/15 (no bronze medal match), 40%
  • Women's +65kg: 3/8, 37.50%
  • Men's -88kg: 6/16, 31.25%
  • Men's -77kg: 6/16, 31.25%
  • Women's -55kg: 2/7 (no bronze medal match), 28.57%
  • Women's -65kg: 2/8, 25%

A Family First

The Rocha family became the first to all compete at the same ADCC World Championship, with father Vagner, daughter Jasmine, and son Achilles all in the event. Vagner has been competing at ADCC Worlds for years and now joins his two children in being on the biggest stage in grappling.

Vagner took silver at -77kg, beating tough grapplers like Elijah Dorsey and Jonnatas Gracie on the way. After his absolute run ended, the crowd at T-Mobile chanted his name in appreciation for the older grappler who has stayed so relevant. He has already committed to ADCC 2026.

Jasmine, the North American Trials champion at -55kg, took bronze at her weight and in doing so, also made history by becoming the first ever father/daughter pair to medal at the same ADCC. Jasmine was the youngest in her division and is already a medalist - signaling a bright future.

Achilles competed at -88kg at only 17 years old, and lost to eventual finalist Jay Rodriguez. He's expected to be back in the future with this experience to. his benefit - potentially up a weight given his frame.
