While the 2024 Jiu-Jitsu Con looks to give people a place to compete and learn more about the sport, the event  will also be giving back to the sport. 

During the 2024 IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Con and IBJJF Masters Worlds, the sport is honoring and handful of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners by giving them a promotion that has been years in the making.

Earning a promotion to coral belt is one of the highest honors in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu. The belt itself is red and black but they call it a coral belt. 

The ceremony will take place at the 2024 Jiu-Jitsu con on Aug.30.

But here is how these athletes actually earn the promotion to coral belt. 

What Is The Coral Belt In Jiu-Jitsu? 

This belt is the next belt after a black belt. 

How Does An Athlete Earn A Coral Belt In Jiu-Jitsu?

In Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) awards a red and black belt, also known as a coral belt, to practitioners who reach the seventh degree of black belt. The IBJJF requires practitioners to train and teach at the black and red belt level for a minimum of seven years before moving up to the next rank. 

Coral belt practitioners are considered masters of the art and are often referred to as such. They are very experienced and have usually dedicated most of their lives to the sport, which can take decades of practice. 

To reach this level, practitioners must demonstrate mastery of BJJ techniques, such as submissions, guard passes and fighting strategies. They must also contribute to the community by teaching, organizing seminars and helping to spread BJJ around the world. Practitioners must also demonstrate exemplary behavior on and off the mats.
