Michael Pixley stunned the world on Aug.17 by defeating Nicholas Meregali in the quarterfinals of the 2024 ADCC World Championships. Pixley, a former NAIA and D2 college wrestling champion, submitted Meregali with an armbar in the -99KG weight class.

This victory was particularly surprising as Meregali was the No. 4-ranked pound-for-pound no-gi grappler in the world and was attempting to double gold at ADCC. Pixley made it to the World Championships as ADCC West Coast Trials Champion.

Here's what to know about Michael Pixley.

Michael Pixley Has A Wrestling Background

Pixley was an elite high school wrestler and went on to become a National Champion in both NAIA and NCAA Division II wrestling.

According to FloGrappling expert Joe Gilpin, Michael Pixley is the most accomplished wrestler in the ADCC 2024 field.

Gilpin said before ADCC 2024: "Pixley may be the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the field, credential-wise at least with his collegiate titles evidence of a lifetime of taking people down. He's transitioned that to grappling where he has a punishing front headlock series that he continues to develop and the rest of his game is following nicely. Because of the rules here, Pixley can knock off anyone - but he does lack some of that elite experience against the field, so we don't know how matches against a Meregali or Duarte would look."

If he isn't a top-8 seed, someone is going to be mad they drew Pixley.

Michael Pixley Was The ADCC West Coast Trials Champion

Pixley won the West Coast Trials with a high submission rate, showcasing his ability to finish matches decisively and his dominance in the competition.

Pixley Is A Two-Time IBJJF No-Gi Champion

Michae Pixley has twice taken first place in an IBJJF competition.

In 2021, Pixley took first place in the men's blue belt open class at World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship.

In 2022, again took first, this time in the men's blue belt super-heavy class at the IBJJF No-Gi Championship.
