7 of the BEST ADCC 2024 First Round Matchups
Check out some of these mindblowing first round matchups for 2024 ADCC World Championships
The full brackets for ADCC are finally here! With all the paths to gold finally known, it's sure to be a weekend full of the most exciting grappling action in the world. While all the later rounds are sure to be packed with exciting matchups and intriguing rivalries, the first round is also sure to be nuts.
We picked out some of our favorite matchups going down very first round at ADCC, starting tomorrow Saturday the 17th at 10am local PST.
Achilles Rocha vs Jay Rodriguez
-This might end up being the most action-packed match of the entire tournament and it goes down round one at -88kg. Jay Rod is an ADCC veteran who lives in back-and-forth chaotic matches that are as full of pace and scrambles as they are with incredible technique. Achilles is the same way, either finishing fights early (he holds the record for fastest WNO submission EVER) or being in a brawl that brings the crowd alive. There’s just no way that these two together do not deliver fireworks, especially early on with the crowd bringing the energy. Achilles has a real knack for finding explosive armbars out of scrambles and Jay has a crazy ability to never tap to armbars - a dynamic that is worth watching coming in.
Mike Perez vs Josh Saunders
-The ultimate wildcard in this bracket is Mike Perez, as the -88kg athlete bumped all the way up and won Trials at +99 to earn his shot here. First round? The hulking Australian Saunders who is fresh off of a WNO title shot and fresh promotion to black belt and riding tons of momentum. Perez will bring speed, athleticism, and a tough mindset that continues to drive him forward against any opposition. Will that be enough against Saunders who is as active and athletically gifted as anyone in this division? Let’s see, first round. There is a chance we see speed and scrambles in this match we do not see matched in the rest of +99kg.
Mica Galvao vs Luiz Paulo
-We have some drama first round of ADCC at -77kg. Mica and Luiz used to train together until Luiz left the Melqui Galvao team with Fabricio Andrey and Brenda Larissa until they left a few years ago. Now, they meet first round of ADCC. Mica is certainly the man to beat here in this bracket - and could legitimately contend for double gold - but it’s got to start with someone who is very familiar with him and his game. Luiz got here by running a gauntlet at South American Trials and for the last few years has only needed a breakout opportunity to prove how good he is. Now, that opportunity comes against Mica.
Mateusz Szczeciński vs Garry Tonon
-The Most Exciting Grappler In The World is back and ready to author another highlight reel run though ADCC. First up, though, he runs into one of the best modern leg lockers. Garry was an OG in the leg locking game, part of the Danaher Death Squad that popularized the lower body attacks that revolutionized the sport. Mateusz took the straight ankle and revolutionized that submission lock and put it back on the map. These are two exciting, influential leg lockers that have never met before and now they get to go at it round one at ADCC.
Michael Pixley vs Vinicius Trator
-This is a very interesting style matchup that pairs wrestler Pixley with pressure fighter Trator in a bout that could spell upset for the 2019 silver medalist early. Pixley won West Coast Trials and brings a style that is going to be tough to deal with considering his prodigious takedown skills. Trator is as savvy and experienced as they come, so a proper gameplay will be key for his chances early to make a better run.
Amanda Leve vs Ana Carolina Vieira
-Amanda and Ana are the two biggest, strongest, most physical women in the division and they match up in the first round! Two brutes that are used to moving people all around the mat, Ana and Amanda are likely to meet in the middle and figure things out. A big factor in this match - has Amanda recovered enough from her traumatic knee injury from Trials? Whoever wins this one will likely carry a lot of advantages in every other match they have this weekend and could very well end up winning it.
Dorian Olivarez vs Gairbeg Ibragimov
-Crazy wrestling battle round one! Dorian is a high school national champion and who won Trials and has become the popular pick to medal among grappling fans and insiders. There’s no easy path at -66kg but he drew a very interesting round one opponent for his debut - Dagestan wrestling specialist Gairbeg Ibragimov. These may be the two most credentialed wrestlers in the field and they meet up immediately. How will they match up? Can Dorian use his pace and hand fighting to pressure Gairbeg or will Gairbeg be able to counter attack and control the match?
