The race for the 2024 Grappler of the Year will likely be decided from Aug. 17 to Aug. 18 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during the 2024 ADCC World Championship.

And it’s fair to say that Mica Galvão is currently winning that race and can pull away if he’s able to win the -77KG weight class bracket.

“Mica is trying to accomplish something that’s only ever been done once before,” said FloGrappling analyst and reporter Joe Gilpin. “He’s trying to become the second person ever to win all four IBJJF majors and an ADCC World title in the same year.”

The other person who accomplished this was Rubens "Cobrinha" Charles, who is considered one of the greatest grapplers ever.

Galvão won all his matches at IBJJF Brasileiro in a matter of seconds. He dominated the the field at IBJJF Worlds and he is the current Welterweight WNO champion.

In short: All he’s done this year is win.

Here’s why no BJJ fan should miss a second of Mica Galvão's ADCC 2024 run.

Mica Galvão Could Have The Best ADCC Submission Win

It didn’t take long for for Galvão's name to surface when Gilpin was asked who could have the best submission of ADCC.

It’s just part of Galvão's style.

“I would expect that Mica Galvão in his first few matches is going to try and come out and put on a show and get off the mat very quickly,” Gilpin said. “I think for him and his style and where he can stay explosive by not having long matches, I think that really benefits him.”

Galvão may have landed one of the most impressive submissions of 2023 at WNO 20 against PJ Barch, and Gilpin said it could be a preview for what fans will see in the -77KG bracket.

“I think that he's somebody who has put on some really incredible performances before,” Gilpin said. “He’s a very submission oriented grappler who transitions from the feet on to the floor with a submission already locked up very well. There’s no better example than his flying armbar at WNO 20 against PJ Barch.

“I think that if you are interested in seeing somebody that is dynamically attacking submissions, I think that he is certainly one to watch,” Gilpin added.

Mica Galvão is Just 20. And He’s On The Verge Of BJJ History

When Cobrinha completed the IBJJF Grand Slam and then won the ADCC World Championship, which happened in a run where he won three straight -66KG ADCC World Titles from 2013-2017, it was at the end of his career.

Cobrinha was 37 when he accomplished the feat.

“For Mica, it’s really just the beginning of his career,” Gilpin said of the 20-year-old. “He’s spending 2024 really announcing himself as probably the top pound-for-pound guy, regardless of style,  if he is able to do this.

"It is a stunning declaration of dominance for someone who is still so very young in his grappling career.”
