Gordon Ryan vs. Yuri Simões Is BJJ, ADCC History. Here's Why To Watch
Gordon Ryan vs. Yuri Simões will make ADCC history at the 2024 ADCC World Championships. Here's why to watch the epic clash in Las Vegas.
Yuri Simões has staked a claim as one of the best -88KG and -99KG grapplers in the world and FloGrappling analyst and reporter called him a “future Hall of Famer.”
But while the recently turned 34-year-old Brazilian star has certainly cemented his legacy as a three-time ADCC World Champion, he has another opportunity to grow his legend.

Meanwhile, Gordon Ryan is almost certainly on the shortlist of active future ADCC Hall of Famers and with another win over Simões he could move him closer to being considered the greatest grappler ever.
That is the backdrop to what will be the final match of the 2024 ADCC World Championship on Aug. 18 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The ultimate capstone to the sport of no-gi jiu-jitsu’s grandest tournament.
Here’s why BJJ fans across the world should watch Gordon Ryan vs. Yuri Simões.
Gordon Ryan, Yuri Simões Combine For 7 ADCC World Championships
Gordon Ryan has won three ADCC World Championships in three different weight classes (-88KG, -99KG and +99KG). He is the 2019 Absolute ADCC Champion. Ryan is a member of the exclusive ADCC Double Gold Club with some of the biggest names in the history of the sport like Mark Kerr, Andre Galvao and Roger Gracie, among others. Ryan is also the only man to ever win a weight class (+99KG) and Super Fight in the same year, 2022.
Simões is a three-time ADCC Champion in two different weight classes (-88KG, -99KG) and the defending Absolute champion.
Simões’ Absolute win is why he’s facing Ryan.
“Yuri was able to earn the most coveted title shot in all of grappling by running the ultimate gauntlet - the ADCC absolute,” Gilpin said. “He did that by beating several of Gordon's teammates, including Nicholas Meregali.”
Yuri Simões Has Never Beaten Gordon Ryan. But Every Match Has Been Memorable
Simões has a 88-26 record in his long career and four of those losses are to Ryan. The 2018 Absolute IBJJF No-Gi Worlds match was decided by a single advantage.
Ryan defeated Simões for the second time using a rear naked choke in 2017 at the Kasai Pro in the Absolute division. A year later Ryan and Simões met twice at the IBJJF Worlds in the +97KG and the Absolute, and neither time did the greatest no-gi submission grappler win by a submission.
There’s Never Been Two Super Fights At ADCC And Gordon Ryan Is In Both
To say Ryan has a chance to author one of the greatest stories in the history of the sport is fairly accurate. The 29-year-old lost nearly all of 2023 due to a scary stomach illness that he continues to battle heading into ADCC 2024.
Ryan told FloGrappling earlier this summer after he faced Josh Saunders at WNO 24 that he was, quite literally, gutting through the summer because of his legacy.
There’s never been two Super Fights at ADCC and there has never been two Super Fights at ADCC that featured the same grappler twice. Not even Andre Galvao, who grappled in five straight Super Fights and was 4-0 until meeting Ryan in 2022, did that.
To make it even more epic, Ryan is facing the only opponent with a winning record against him in the first fight, Felipe Pena.
A win over Pena would position Gordon to indeed have his own Michael Jordan Flu-Game or Tiger Woods 2008 U.S. Open performance (when he won the Open with a torn ACL while playing five rounds) if he can beat Pena and then Simões.
But there’s a flip side.
Ryan has had to prepare for two of the world’s greatest grapplers. And Simões has only had to focus on one, who also happens to be the best in the world.
“Yuri is a future Hall of Famer, he's a champion, and most importantly he is a winner,” Gilpin Said. “And with only one match to focus on at ADCC he believes he has the formula to do it.”
